Chapter 1
The young woman couldn’t get the evil man’s voice out of her mind as she wandered in a daze through the shadowy hallway of the eerie mansion. A rope was tightly clutched in her hands. She had been hearing his voice for years as he wore her down mentally. Each day he became more determined to drive her insane and, on this night, his demands had reached a culmination. He was commanding her to go to the attic with the rope and end her life.
In a trance, she reached the attic stairs and began to climb them. She was blinded by her tears when she heard his tenacious voice taunt her.
“End it now and all your pain will be over.”
“No,” she said as she held the noose in her hand. “I won’t do it…I can’t!”
She couldn’t shut him out. Reluctantly, she opened the door to the attic.
His voice was persistent. “Aren’t you tired of the pain?”
She put her head down as she answered. “Yes.”
She couldn’t deny that she was tired. And she was weakening more now than ever before as she entered the attic.
“I can make the pain stop,” he said. “You know what you must do.”
She begged him. “Please leave me alone, please!”
“There is only one way to get my voice out of your head.”
“I can’t...I won’t.”
“You can and you will! You’re never going to be free of me as long as you’re alive.”
“Don’t say that…it can’t go on like this.”
“Oh, but it will.” The man cackled as she moved the chair in place.
“Why are you doing this to me?”
“Because you are an easy target. Now you are boring me. Stop fighting and let yourself fall.”
“I won’t do it!”
“Your will is never going to be stronger than mine,” he said. “You’re just making it harder for yourself. Let go!”
“But my family—”
“—will be better off without a pathetic lowlife like you. You know that you have always known it. End this now!”
Without even realizing it, she had stepped on top of the chair, tied the rope onto the rafters, and slipped her head into the noose.
“Good girl,” were the final words she heard from him as she stepped off the chair to her agonizing death.
