Ned Chalmers, a reporter for the Neuville Star, attends the funeral services of Josephnine (Josie) Parsons, a hign school basketball star. He questions why she holds a maple leaf in the casket. His curiosity heightens as he interviews Josie's famly and friends to get an answer.

Ned stomped the snow off his boots as he entered the church. It seems he brought the dark, gloomy weather into the cavernous sanctuary with him. St. James was overflowing with people. Most of them were young, perhaps still in their teens. He began to wonder if he was going to be able to find a seat as he meandered his way around small groups huddled in the aisles talking while others sat in pews engrossed in inner thought.
