Four months after my wife and I moved from Boston to Sarasota,I arranged for my semi-annual urological checkup with my new urologist, Dr. Jonathan Jones of St. Petersburg Hospital... First he conducted the usual DRE - the digital rectal exam, palpating with a gloved hand for any tumors or bumpy, hardened prostate tissue. ...In this book Weinsberg, a rabbi, discusses in great detail his personal journey with the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. ...This book has been well written and is a mix of serious contemplation, real-life experience and humor from a man who has spent his professional life serving and supporting others. Weinsberg spares nothing in describing his own angst over his disease, and the fear of loss of continence and sexual function associated with treatment.

Having opted for robotic assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and experiencing a good outcome, his description gives the reader the initial sense of over enthusiasm for this specific procedure. To his credit, the author tempers his enthusiasm with a fair representation of all of the options for managing this ubiquitous disease.

Some of the stories he relates of other patients and their treatment decisions are anecdotal at best, which he freely acknowledges. He also provides references for each chapter as well as printed resources that allow readers to explore their own concerns and options beyond this text.

A foreword by Dr. Vipul Patel and a post-text section by the contributing author, Dr. Robert Carey, round out the education of the lay reader. Patients with prostate cancer and their families and friends seeking something to help them through their experience will likely find this book useful.

If you know a man who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer—or a woman who loves him—give them a copy of Conquer Prostate Cancer: How Medicine, Faith, Love and Sex Can Renew Your Life, by Rabbi Ed Weinsberg, Ed.D., D.D., written with urologist Robert Carey, M.D., PhD.
Weinsberg has written my favorite kind of cancer book: A survivor with special skills and training in a related field (in this case a spiritual leader who has an advanced degree in gerontology) writes a well-researched book that uses his or her own experience to bring together all sides of a topic, including the most current research and voices of medical professionals and other survivors. Because of his spiritual base, Weinsberg goes one step further by addressing mind, body, spirituality, and intimacy issues with candor and clarity. As he says in the book’s preface, “Apart from medicine and faith, love and sex have a lot to do with recovering from prostate cancer and its adverse treatment outcomes.”
But unlike many “this is my story and I have the answer” books, Weinsberg brings in his doctors and other professionals to talk to readers. In discussing his surgery, he gives us a minute-by-minute explanation of what he does to prepare mentally and physically—up until the moment he goes under from anesthesia. At this point, his surgeon, Carey, takes over, explaining exactly what he had to do to remove the cancer and rebuild Weinsberg’s bladder neck. Weinsberg also quotes studies (that he documents in the sources section), and moves into those very difficult subjects of sex and intimacy to help his readers look at all the aspects of this cancer diagnosis, treatment, healing, and after-effects.
We all know that men are not good at talking about areas below the waist, particularly when there is a problem, but for Weinsberg, nothing is sacred—and everything is sacred. He addresses, with amazing candor the issues of male hormones, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and relationships. Clearly, the years he spent counseling his congregants has given him a special insight into the human condition, which he uses to gather information from other men about their choices in treatment and the emotional and physical toll that had to be addressed. It’s clear that this man who committed his life to his faith has found a new mission in retirement.
