YELP ! for Teen Readers and Adult Readers
Hilariously Crazy and Wilfully Nuts
Spartacus has one goal - to get even with the heartless old woman who had him "fixed". The stroppy Jack Russell terrier will never ever forgive her for putting an end to a family that traces its pedigree back to Caesar.
When Reggie borrows her partner's new mobility scooter the little dog gets his chance to get even by leaving her stranded in the middle of a war between Roman forces and rebel queen Boadicea. But the danger of her situation is offset by her transformation from a dpressed old woman into a plucky and resourceful teenager.
Unique, funny and quite, quite mad, Yelp! is an exuberant tale of boisterous teenage rebels and a smart, bratty mutt with a personality all his own.
A Historical Fantasy with an Unusual Interpretation of the Past
Sandra Clair:
Yelp! caught my attention because it takes Roman-occupied Britain in 61 AD and approaches that historical setting from an unusually irreverent direction. The presence of Boadicea’s rebellion gives the story a genuine historical backdrop, but instead of treating the period as a conventional historical adventure, it places a rebellious teenager, a transformed older woman, and a thoroughly difficult Jack Russell named Spartacus at the centre of the chaos.
That contrast is what makes the book stand out. Spartacus’s grudge over being “fixed,” Reggie’s unexpected transformation, and the absurdity of a modern mobility scooter becoming entangled with a revolt against Roman forces create a very different way of approaching a well-known period of British history.
Beneath the comedy, the story also plays with ideas of resistance, identity, age, and the refusal to accept the role that circumstances have assigned you.
Yelp! has the kind of distinctive historical-fantasy approach that can give readers something outside the usual interpretations of the past.
