Meanwhile, in the library, there was a chilling silence as the air thickened. Dominic said nothing, merely staring at his wife.
Finally, she broke the silence, her voice wavering. “Dominic, I know you do not understand this…” as soon as she began speaking, his eyes narrowed, dangerously. She tried to summon the courage to continue and dared moving closer to him. ‘You are angry with me. I can see it in your eyes. You have every right to be, my darling.” This time, he eyed her with a look she had never seen before. For the first time, she feared her husband.
His jaw clenched, he came within inches of her. His form over her was menacing. In a deadly tone, he spoke as his obsidian gaze bored into her. “Do not dare to presume that you know how I feel. You have no right! You have no idea the damage I could do to you.”
Lucien took a step forward, stopping when Ian placed himself between the men. “This is between them.” Rather than cause a row, Lucien stepped back and remained silent. Ian nodded and did the same.
“S’il vous plait, Dominic,” her mind pleaded silently to his as she brought her palms gently to each side of his face.
The venom in his glare caused her to recoil like a terrified child. He reached forward, grasping her wrists tightly. He hissed, “no, Marielle! You have no idea how I have suffered! I thought my only beloved was dead. You let me believe my most cherished love was dead.” Roughly, he released her, and turned his back toward her, hiding the pain of his broken heart. Taking a deep breath, he turned to Ian. “Take Lucien to my study. I will join him there in a few minutes.” He sneered at the elder vampire. “And do not let him out of your sight.”
Ian nodded and extended his hand toward the door, looking to Lucien. Without further word, they stepped from the library, leaving Dominic and Marielle alone.
Marielle watched in silence, as they departed. When Dominic turned and merely stared through her, she shuddered openly. She could not remember a time when she had ever seen his face so full of pain, anguish, and confusion.
Looking at her now, Dominic wanted nothing more than to take her in his arms and never let go. But she had betrayed him and that was something he never took lightly. How could he proceed lightly with Marielle when such pain had been placed upon Anna when she betrayed Dorian? He knew he could not. Raising his chin in contemplation, he turned from her, trying to hide the hurt.
Bravely, Marielle moved forward, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Dominic, please listen to me.”
