Ian said nothing from across the room as he looked to her. He nodded his invitation for her to enter
“Are you sure?” She hesitated before entering.
“I wouldn’t have opened the door if I wasn’t.” His voice was low, even, and held no emotion. He was in no mood, it seemed, to play cat and mouse games with her this morning. “Tell me why you’re here,” he continued tossing things in his bag. “What did I do, now? What coals am I going to be raked over? What hoops am I going to have to jump through for your in-flight entertainment once we’re on that plane? I promise to make it easy for you.”
The look in her eyes showed her shame. She wanted to apologize and the coolness of his tone withered her usual confidence.
“I’m sorry,” he looked to the floor and tucked his hands into the pockets of his faded jeans. He leaned back against the wall behind him and said no more, merely studied her.
She heard his mind. He was wondering if her beauty could cripple any man, human or vampire. He wondered if he was a puppet. A slave to her beauty.
The atmosphere thickened as they stood studying the depths of each other’s soul, looking for the answers that should have been clear long ago but remained buried for a variety of reasons, most recently, their own pasts.
Finally, Raven braved speaking and approached him.
Ian remained still, not taking his eyes from hers.
Apprehension gnawed at her usual confidence as she reached out her hand and lightly pressed her palm to his cheek. The coolness chilled her. He had fed in the last few hours but it hadn’t been enough. Something was eating at him from the inside out. She moved closer, focusing on him. She knew exactly what was draining him.
In a faint whisper, she said to him, “I am sorry, Ian. For all the cruelty and vicious treatment I bestowed on you. I can only hope that one night you will find it within yourself to forgive me. You have saved my life and avenged me. I should have been grateful and instead I tried to continue shoving you away. I will be forever in your debt.”
His silence and cold stare caused her to recoil, almost wishing she had not come into his room. He grasped her wrist as she was about to pull her palm from his cheek.
