High school is not for sissies. I figured that one out the first day of freshman year. I’d spent the last three years of my life being relentlessly bullied, and quite honestly, I didn’t think it could get any worse. I had no friends my own age, had never had a boyfriend and unlike most girls in my class, I still had no boobs.
I had been looking forward to the day that I would first grace the halls of Glenmark High since the sixth grade. In my mind, high school was when things really started to happen for a girl, and lord knows, I was ready for something good to happen to me.
That summer, on the day of my fourteenth birthday (June 26 to be exact), I decided to make some life changes. I needed to be more assertive, more mature and more in tune with my life. I needed to get myself out there. Popularity isn’t just handed to you. If you want people to take notice, you need to give them something to notice.
The first thing I did was start a blog, daisyrosebrown.com. I also created a Facebook page (against my father’s wishes) and then I put together a list of eight things that I planned to make happen before the end of the school year. Like most fourteen-year-old girls, I had a million different things that I wanted to accomplish in life, but I firmly believed it was important to take small steps. I settled on eight things because, first of all, eight is my favorite number and furthermore, I knew I needed to keep the list manageable.
