Excerpt
---The Simmons Forensic Hospital stood on a valley-hilltop. Clustered-by overgrowth, shielded-buildings…re-functionalized and functional business-facilities. Utilized as well as partial useless, abandoned and a prospective land-construction... Nearly, federated lot-grant system. Running from once its outer-limits. A quailed provincial town to pursuing, but not ever catching, intentioned progress. It was probably a fact that Vintonburg-was ’pulled’, instead of the other way-around, into the 20th century. It was obvious by per capita complex-fed their franchise. It having probably not gone unaffiliated-by town and facility-proctoring.
While coordinators and city-council planned for the public convictions about aspects-of public ‘purpose’. In best prospects by the complex-proper. That were espousing, the ‘wheel ‘n deal’ of ‘post-modern profile and personal, professional prodding… It was probably, relevance-early. Along concision of the community, and line-of-reason. David watched the mortared and dusty, lacquer-painted black almost base-black , white-washed walls and mixed-compound floors. Smell of mold, old-furniture and decaying-plastic and rubber. The day-shift had just began an exodus in their casual all-white dress-downs. A bustle of white-conversed, cajoled and cavorted in a ‘will‘-of unwinding. David realized this was the ‘waking-day’. Personnel, which had been ‘relayed‘-integrative. So he tried not to notice but he was now a ‘new-charge‘.
Yet he was given into the guardianship of workers. With ‘Red-neck’-leanings, believing that men and women in equal-balance and caliber. People, three steps from ‘farm-crops’ and two-steps from rural-dereliction. In winter of ‘92. The ‘security-aides’ as they were called were most often, solely responsible for patients. From waking to bed-time. The Simmons forensic maximum security hospital was a 184 to 304 sleeping-quarters-facility. There was anywhere from solitary-rooms of total-confinement. Called: “seclusion-rooms”. Violent-clients were placed-there. To occupant-rooms, depending on population-to ‘reactors’ ratio... Whom became ‘dangerously, active‘, or uncontrollable. Observation-rooms for high-risk, new-intensives, and ‘rule-breakers’ of major-rules, such as threats and rowdiness. Psychotic-adversaries, and commanding, general-rules; that would later be of lament. Be annulling to as personal-violations, as infirming rules. The main-intention, in involution, was an ‘aging‘, pretense based-upon ‘precepts’. The ‘near-and-far’ of social and clinical practicing-parameters... Consummate consulates, in-psychiatrics being ‘dressed-in’ the ‘purest of colors‘. They would have to be somewhere in first-echelon of impression and a conducive-to constraining, without any objection.
David, was taken in chains and asked to sit on ward S-9 unit. The ‘introductory-ward’, a 20’ by 25’ unit-dayroom. Which only was the area of movement and also the area of observation. The large-nurse’s station window looked-out on the yellowy-musty 2-sided-walls and windowed interior one-opaque, with intense age. The other-blithely, heavy-construct with requisite incidence. Along the North-window the TV set hanged in the corner. A 16-inch Zenith about five years-old, so well-used it could pass for twelve or fourteen years old. There was a bookcase. It sat hidden-behind the entrance-door which nearly, always remained a opened, ‘transparent’. Nurse station observation-window, was set-in painted iron-bars. With in 1 by 2-feet frames. The inside was actually, ‘white’. ...Like there uniforms, record shelves, and a placed table-top. And, as so often, a prong-wheeled office-chair, about two-feet high. There were four-of them. There was a concourse of entry-ways to center-office. A restroom, and an adjoining doorway to adjacent other ward-offices. He sat, purposefully, on the other-side of the office-doorway. Without arms in the aides’ three chair. With the remaining-one having arm-rests. For someone of importance, awaiting-mere work-processing.
It was 4:35 p.m. before anyone-spoke... Although David didn’t know-it was a rule to ‘not’ speak before 4:30. If the rules were violated it had a penalty. No second-chance or discussion was given. It was automatic... Many rules and likely-some that were stretch-fully, impressed led a patient to enclosure... It would become a practice in intimidation and derisively, reprobate. It being that an ‘timidity’ about the rule-enforcement. Which was laid down-upon patients like a ‘heavy-hand’. Many fell to the unforgiving-exacting. For exemplary of staff attendants had to be unobserved, giving them ‘free-control’. Once-condoned by professionals as by others in-charge allowed in their ‘private-discretion’. It was Thursday, two-days before Thanksgiving. He didn’t expect-gifts or even a phone-call from his father or sisters. Having left the family-ties, behind. He’d left many things and sacrificed in-objective of future-’flame’. Still, burning as a ‘second-chance’ and a painless-soul. A self-veneration of unknowing result.

...As there having been many privately, destined pursuits. That in turn, he having had a number of personal draw-backs. In the past 3 years, by what was a certain learning and earning. In what was self-contention. Living-on the streets. Eating out of soup-kitchens...with homeless and portal-men, women and children. Experiencing severe-weather exposure... In what was a loneliness and distraught devotion. In a family that was ‘only’ fending-for itself. Occasionally, visiting the family out-of a sense of love and caring. While rarely, sharing the ‘burden’ of moneyless disadvantage. Or unwanted despair, keeping-each circumstance to themselves. Having made no-difference, in the first-time in 3 years. Abandoning a helpless and lonely, ’feast-or-famine’ life-style. While barely scraping-by. ...Experiences, left in-remittance. Only, at times with lonely, subsistence. Thereby, in despair, disadvantage and disregard, essentially. An inundated ‘truth’ in unknowing-times as expecting, dissolving, and ‘disappointing’.
On top of all this, because of his-family members giving more to ‘fright’ and friction than fortification and faith... His mother, was falling-deeper into an ‘isolation’... An ‘adult principle‘ disjoining the once seemingly, ‘never-failing’ family ties. All the ‘gracious‘-providing and benefactions. Now being a ‘lost past’... And as eminent an aspect in irrevocable, ‘emancipation‘. David’s family-life had many self-‘convictions’. But ‘few’ taught and conjoining explications, were passed-down... He’d been in family ‘considerations’ as an un-reliant. Offering, by somehow being, in a ‘sculpted scheme’ acknowledged-by maturity. He’d been passed-over for now. Being a too, promising ever-present; along assertive parental-lines. Life’s little events or actions, sometimes run ‘deep’, uncovering evanescent-results. We all take irretrievable-steps that shut doors as unveiling-hopes. What was existent in what turned out to be a ‘simple-life’. Often carry with it a self-‘disposition’, social-embodiment and abandoned values. Around some long past ‘freeing’-corner.
…David was backed-by ‘heredity’ and heritage. His family was descendant from revolutionary war-heirs. …Great-men of insight, vision and intellect. Native-American chieftains, black-slaves, and the French on the Mayflower. Yeomanry-descendants...fighting the Spanish-American war as Rough-Riders with Teddy Roosevelt… Some Spanish-Mexican, Swedish, Danish-Polish and German possibly, going-back to Leonard the Red. First European-explorer known to travel to the New-World at one-time. The Congo-Bushman of Zimbabwe, et al all dwelled within his deep, brown-eyes. This held to its own dwelling empowerment.
Still as, in class-work examinations. He felt-‘pride’ and ‘shame‘. As to how ultimately, proficient was his-abilities had been ‘sharp‘. He went-on to pass his academic-classes. Achieving a first-stage degree. Not long-after he had a sinking feeling. Being of a sense of ‘failure’, feelings of disappointment, and ‘down’. As if, what he was doing was superficial, unrealizable yet also being obviously, competent... It seeming ‘less’ than true. Yet it had lain at his-feet would it ever really, materialize fully? Through-out his college-years harkening-back to childhood. With its aversive-‘potency’ and control. In a consternations of held-over self-‘choices’, denials and fears... In what was deep-down. He-thought it would somehow come-back upon him. Life it seemed may rotate, default or be dissolved... In what was a ‘quantitative’ or ‘artificial’-design. ...In his case, being trapped in a ‘downward spiral’.
...David-felt this almost constantly… Not having many-friends. After completing two-years of study… Now, living in a white middle-class neighborhood. In the southern-part of town. It became a disappointment, social-wise. Residents rarely, crossed racial lines… This, non-contact residential-reality was dispossessing. Pre-disposing his psyche toward those whose lifestyle-seemed to ‘mete’ in purpose. Yet publicly, showing racially-‘opposite’ in interactive profile. David worked, traveled and did what had to be done, alone. …Sometimes, he would wonder as in childhood. What totally were the ‘realities’ of the more ‘populous’ race... David couldn’t ‘say‘, in any self-asserting manner... It, having had nothing to-do with any rector. In ‘under-class’ realities against ‘pride’, or an antisocialism against racism. In that ‘realm‘, he was a ‘Preppy’(or ‘Buppy’). Having a humble demeanor in actualities, actions and perceptions. In the long-run. Saving himself from the diversionary-‘idioms’ of situation and disappointment.
It was sun-set in the western-sky. In an usual skyward-‘typicality’. He was now off from class. Weekly, riding-home as the ‘bright-shine’-rayed along the clean thorough-ways of the facilities’ front. “Rays” as the sun went-down... Pouring-down upon the driving-lanes... David had input 10-hours. Arriving at 7:45 a.m. until leaving at 5:45 p.m. in late-winter. The sun made for a past-day’s warmth. Melting the snow into ‘slush‘. A walking-path’s snow-cover along the lane had melted. ...Shoveling and salting had began-early. The snows ended-early that day. David wore green-goulashes. Snows had piled-up two and half-feet over-night. ‘Farewell‘, evening-sunshine meant a last ‘glimmer’-of hope. David stood-at the bus-stop with others who’d attended. During the day-shift, in dormant heavy-winter, as spring and autumn. Registering in late-summer for the upcoming semester. Waiting in-line several-hours, reporting to registrar, for scheduling taking his-photo for a student-pass... All done, and now, in the throes-of-snow and icy-winds. He rested at a bus-stop in the area... ...The main-snow had been salted-away. And the melted-ice now evaporated. And was misting off. In places, snow stood a meter-high and driving-surfaces were covered with wet, icy-mush...
Now, a last-warming-‘yaw’. In the indentured-winter began to stretch an coming reactive-arm. David liked the cold. It was quieted, as summer was full-of bustle and recreation. Winters meant fewer-people, less-interaction letting one live independent, through-out the area... There were other-followers: the ‘practical-bohemians’, the ‘sensible-economist’, and the exploitatively, conjoined-’deciders’ looking-for what may… ...Stringent-workers, doing their-job keeping the less earning, interred in-life. David caught a bus alongside nearly, a score of people. Some hard-borne students trying for advance standing. In the present or future-application as well they were ‘chance-takers’. As David knew them, they had a more ‘adventurous’-side. Trying new-aspects, new-experiences and experimenting with scholastic standards. Mutual contemporaries of David’s closes-to his-station discovering. There was much ‘new’ about going-to college and to learning-ethics… As classes ended they stayed away-from his strong-intellect. Out of possessed, indigenous and ‘xenophobic’-fears.
…David often traveled one-seated on the bus. Out-upfront in the coach-seat. Watching the driving along the roadway. Often memorizing many aspects, making conversation with drivers he remembered as was conversing... Riding-on into the inner-city. Where the hustle and bustle-chosen considerably, by pedestrians, cars and streets. That was meant more for business and distractions. Often finding other buses carrying him away from the ruckus. ...Which tended to thrived along the hub and lesser camaraderie among insensitive downtown region. The drivers were attentive-to traffic, riders-preparing to disembark. And those boarding and loading were the typical city-urchins, ‘street-wise‘… Many times being rebuffed by the typical-public. He, knowing them as disenfranchised individuals, both being males and females.
“Yeh…and they said on the news. Reagan’s going-to elect a women to the Supreme-court…”-(Silence. Watching-traffic, as the bus moves-on.-Driver.). “You know for a Republican. He’s doing some liberal-things…” “...Yeh, ‘it’ sure ‘does‘.” “…And you know, he would have never won the election. If he was not a contributor-to ‘North-gate’”... David’s ambiguous assertion landed-upon Cauliflower-ears. Continuing a one-sided conversation as if about to be jettison-from an airplane. Not knowingly, ‘failing’ in those he thought he needed a social-’niche’. Thursday-evening...streetlights had come-on as he arrived at home. Sometimes wanting-to ‘walk’ rather than ride the entire-distance home... Beginning to self-consciously, dislike his circumstance. Arriving, he was overcome in a subjective-fear. Where at school, he had had confidence and self-purpose... At home, in his mother’s home he was doust with a ‘all-wet’ sense of melancholia.
His two-sisters and two-nephews had gave him a sense of deplorable off-setting. His younger half-sister dislike him. She was in her late-teens, and in the high-school military. His mother was on welfare ‘subsidy‘. Somehow, she paid-for uniforms, books and other-necessities. His two-nephews had free-run of the house. Their-ruckus and his older-sister being constantly, wrapped-up in her work, child-rearing and isolated, selfish steadfastness. None, including the children, chose to give heed-to David’s concerns, cares or commitments... The aspects and factors of David’s newly, attaining-life. And that none of them could realize, he was alone in his-intentions, devotion and dedication. ...So a day at school, under ‘harsh’ conditions was only a ‘frontal-piece‘. …Of which, an ‘inner‘-face was the isolated personal observations.
He’d been ‘a-partial’ to, in ‘tasks’ and actions. Fully, knowing that his ‘position’ and intentions were ‘only’ hope and motivation. As a result, only-‘one’ could acknowledge his-accomplishment... Home, was a ‘Lot‘ place... Family, should have been a place of shelter, and abode. Now, a rift of what was a wrongful espousal was being expressed. Long ago being, most-precocious by ‘self-valor‘… He deciding long ago not to ‘super-imposing’… Now having once-loved, they all led separate lives. Sitting upon his bed watching-TV. Barely, noticing the yelling-and-noise of unruly and disruptive family-members. Carrying-on outside of his room, in a disconcerted life. Eight p.m., he was asleep in a warm-bed with an electric-heater running. As outside temperatures fell below, freezing and winds picked-up. It would be a short night, and tomorrow was exam-day.
‘Now…’ ...‘This equation...is marked by imminent-reprise‘... ‘...that practicum and proposal...calibrates. Co-efficiently(a pun).’ ...‘Let’s see if anyone of you can deduce, a solution…
