Jack leaned forward in his chair to lean closer to Erica.
He stared directly into her eyes and said, “You see, Erica, I lived out in the cold long enough to see things others never see. I could pick the one undercover operative out of a crowd of a hundred. Do you know why? Because it takes one to know one, Officer Morillo. You can see it on their faces, and in their eyes. They’re mixed in society, but not a part of it. Perfectly blending in the background, but always out of place. Lost in a sea of ordinary lives, while living extraordinary ones. There are many officers who master the details, Erica, but precious few ever master the extreme disconnection from their true lives.”
