Nick Sawyer is a war veteran who works in search and rescue with his Malamute Cisco. Bitter and disillusioned, Nick is convinced no woman would want a man incapable of loving or being loved.

Annie Flynn, the new veterinarian in town, struggles to raise Jimmy, a difficult 12 year old foster child. Herself a product of the foster care system, Annie counts on no one but herself. But when Jimmy finds a stray dog, Annie enlists Nick to train the nasty little mutt and is unprepared for the emotions Nick arouses in her.

In his line of work, Nick is prepared for anything...except Annie. Despite his efforts to thwart his feelings for her, the walls of his defenses begin to crumble.
