She fell for a prince whose secrets could topple an empire.
Be secret decree, Nicholas Romanov, a prince of Imperial Russia, is next in line to the throne. Driven by dark passions, yearning for freedom from tyranny, he has sworn to avenge the execution of his father by the Tsar and the murder of his mother who spurned the Tsar's love. But the dangerous charade he plays is threatened by those who would resort to murder to prevent him from reaching the throne, and by the fiery American beauty who teaches him that, without love, freedom is just an illusion.
What begins for Alana Welles as a capricious European holiday turns into a journey of deceit and betrayal. From the blood-soaked sands of the Spanish bullring, to the English countryside, from the war-ravaged Crimea, to glittering St. Petersburg, Alana follows her reckless heart into the arms of the handsome Russian prince whose secrets can topple an empire.
Excerpt
Dusk was descending as the coach rolled over the pitted road leading back to the hacienda. Alana's head fell back against the flannel seat and she closed her eyes in a vain attempt to block out the image of Diego's body on the ground turning the sands in the bullring crimson, and the harsh slap she had delivered to Nicholas' handsome face.
A throbbing faster than her heartbeats turned her head away from her thoughts. A horse was approaching at a gallop. Her heart leaped into her throat when she heard a gruff voice order the driver to stop.
The door opened and a black-gloved hand darted inside to grab her by the wrist and pull her from the coach. Through the growing darkness she saw the glint of his fierce eyes as his arm coiled around her, pulling her savagely against him, and his arrogant lips claimed hers in a hard and angry kiss that drew the breath out of her lungs.
Finally, he released her, pulling back sharply to glare into her face. They were both breathing deeply. He dropped his hands to his side, and with a wild look of triumph on his face, he said, "Now we both have something to remember."
