Chapter 1

Saying Goodbye

She was sad to see the one person she loved more than anything was now gone.  She had carried her love for him and had just about given up on him.  Then he walked back into her life like he was always a part of it and now he was gone.
Her brother, Aron, who had taken care of her when she was a kid and even as a teenager, now lay here bleeding and dying in her arms this was the saddest moment in her life.  The only true family she had left was now dying before her very eyes.
“Sammie,” Aron gasped, “Sammie, are you OK?  I am sorry.  I could not let him shoot you.  I love you Sammie.  I love you my sister.”  He coughed spitting up blood.  His breathing was getting shallower with each breath.
“You just hang in there my sweet brother; the doctors will be here soon.  Please, don’t you die on me.”  Sammie cried, as she had not in years.  Begging her brother to stay with her though she knew it was pointless.  “Please Aron; please, don’t you leave me now.  You promised, damn you, you promised you would not leave me.”
“Sammie your safe…now… he is dead.  He can never hurt you again.”  He coughed again this time his breath rattled in his chest.  As he tried to breathe once more, his eyes grew wide and then he went limp in her arms.
“NOOO, Please Aron!” screamed Sammie.  She could hear the sirens in the distance and prayed they would hurry faster.  She did not want to watch her brother die.  She hated him for leaving her even as he left and yet she knew he was right.  For once, he was right that man would never hurt her again.
The sirens kept getting louder and louder but she stopped caring as she accepted that they would not be there in time to save her brother. She held him close and kissed his cheeks and cried over his body. She rocked as she cried and hoped that he was happy where he was now.  She knew that she was going to have to accept it like she accepted everything else in her life. She would hold her head high and honor her brother by living on for him, as he would have wanted for her.  She also knew that she had to be strong to help her husband deal with the loss of his best friend of 26 years.
Aron’s best friend, Sanka Arisumi, was with the New York City District 10 Police Department alongside Aron James Hess Walker.  Sanka had married Samantha Ann Walker Heiss, Aron’s younger sister, right out of high school before she went to college.  They all went to the same college, the City College of New York, where they all majored in different things.  Samantha majored in Social work with a minor in Child Psychology.  She also had a second major in Child Development with a focus on child abuse.  She wanted to become someone that could help some of the lost and lonely kids like she and her late brother was all those years ago.  Moreover, she was almost done with her degree now; she only had 2 weeks left before she would graduate.  She had hoped that Aron would have been there.  Now she was going to only have her husband and her brother’s wife Kara Searson Walker.
The sirens where right there next to her and she could hear the sounds of everyone talking to her and assessing the crime scene. She could hear several people asking her what happened and she could barely respond to them.  She was so lost in thought about her and her brother’s life she did not even notice Sanka come up and try to pull her away from Aron’s lifeless body.
“Come on Sammie you need to get up and the paramedics do their job.”  Said Sanka as he hauled her to her feet and pulled her away from her dead brother’s body.  “Can you tell me what happened?”
“Yes, Caleb Allen Heiss, my former foster father showed up here while I and Aron were talking over my graduation. He wanted me to go to with him to his hotel room.  I did not want to be anywhere nears him so I refused.  Aron told him screw off and to leave or he would have him arrested for harassment.  Caleb said he was our father and had a right to see us.  I told him to leave me alone that I wanted nothing to do with him.  Caleb had said that I was his and I was to do as he said and that I was his property.  Aron told him that I was no one’s property.  Then he gave him one last warning that he should leave.  Caleb still did not want to listen so Aron told me to stay behind him as he walked up to Caleb.  I did not know it that Caleb had a gun until I heard the gunshot.  I am guessing that first shot missed Aron but I am not sure.  Then I heard a two more shot fired in succession of each other.  That is when I saw both my brother and Caleb hit the ground.  Caleb never moved again but Aron was struggling to breathe and I ran to him to care for him. I then called 911 and tried to get him to relax.  Aron told me that I was safe now and that Caleb could never hurt me again.”
By the time, Sammie had finished her statement she was in tears again.  Sanka held her and tried to calm her as she shed her tears of sorrow.  When she finally calmed down and had stopped crying she was able to formally identify who the other man was.  “Yes that is Caleb Allen Hess, he was my foster father but I had thought he was dead. I am not very sad to see him go.”  She told the police officer who had taken her statement of her identification of Caleb.  When she looked at Caleb, she noticed the shot that Aron had fired had hit him right between the eyes.  She had found that very comforting since Aron was a wonder shot and had never missed his shots.  So it made since that he was able to hit him so quickly and so precisely.

The next few days had flown by they had a wonderful funeral and there was small number people that stopped by for days after that.  Sammie kept going to classes and studying because she felt that is what Aron would have wanted her to do.  She was going to only one of them that had been able to complete their college years.  Aron had left college to get a job as a cop and had done very well doing night school but still never finished college before he died.  She wanted to do that much not just for herself but for him.  For Sammie, it was the least she could do to honor his memory, Aron had been a big part of why she went to college in the first place.  The fact that he would not be right there by her side was a very disheartening fact but she also knew that it was the best way to get by during this dark time.
Sanka was there for her 100% and wanted to make sure she was able to handle everything, as he had been there for her when she was a teen and even when she was younger.  He had seen her and her brother Aron through thick and thin.  Kara had come to stay with them for a few days but was back at home and ready to take on the world as she kept saying to Sanka every day. Sanka and Sammie thought she was trying to convince herself more than them.
On her graduation, she was given not only her diploma but also the diploma that Aron would have earned had he continued with his night school classes, that in and of its self was an honor.  Sammie was very proud of how well she was dealing with her loss.  In addition, not only that everyone that knew her treated her no different from before as if they knew that was what she wanted.
Two days after her graduation she was hired and the Department of Child Protective Services and was able to get her own office from day one.  She had met Jack Larmett the day of her interview and he was very impressed with her school records and her passion for helping those that needed and she had specialized in child abuse cases. She had spent most of her first 3 months sifting through all the case files and helping to delegate who got which cases went to which caseworkers.  She had even talked Jack into hiring more workers to make sure that there were enough workers to handle the large caseloads that they seemed to have.  She worked closely with Sanka since he was promoted to the Special Victims Unit for his District and she was able to help them get children out of harm’s way before it was too late.  Kara worked as the Assistant District Attorney for District 10 so she also worked with Sammie as well.
