When a child learns that a parent has died, the immediate response is the same as an adult's - intense pain, bewilderment, and anger. Yet often, no one knows how to help such a child. No one draws him out, no one explains to her what happened, no one tells him why, and no one gives her assurance that she will be okay. Simply saying, "Everything will be all right" isn't sufficient. A child needs specifics. He needs to know who will take care of him, and who will do the things that the parent did. And, deep inside, a child wants to know who will love her.
