A Boston portrait painter unexpectedly meets an attractive wanderer who opens her eyes to the world, especially the Middle-East, and she becomes a woman she never could have imagined.
The story is set in Boston, Abu Dhabi, and Cyprus.

This compelling novel portrays a woman's personal odyssey to self-fulfillment. Lindsay Lawrence, a society portrait painter and recent widow, longs to heal memories of her marriage and focus on her career. She lives a comfortable, insular life in the stately brick townhouse she shared with her husband and daughter on Boston's historic Beacon Hill-until an unexpected encounter with Les, an attractive drifter, changes everything. At first, Les conceals his rage at where life has taken him. After wandering from one odd job to another, especially in the Middle East, he now wants to settle down. Knowing he can neither emulate nor support her lifestyle, Les spirits Lindsay away from Boston and, in the process, opens her eyes to the world. In Abu Dhabi, she learns about the lives of Arabian women. Living with him in a village on Cyprus and interacting with local women, Lindsay discovers her life's purpose. Lindsay's gratitude to Les for leading her to become someone she never anticipated, unfortunately, comes with ambivalence. Will his erratic behavior preclude his being part of the new life she is creating on an island in the Mediterranean? Can their passionate relationship endure? Or will it vanish, fleetingly, like love letters written in the sand?

Excerpt

Chapter One
All I wanted was to be loved.
Overlooking the Boston Public Garden, the venerable Ritz
glowed with soft, shimmering light. When Rod and I walked
through the grand entrance under crystal chandeliers that Saturday
evening, the air tingled with anticipation.
Though I’d reserved a room and taken a table to support this
black-tie benefit, I didn’t think we should attend. Rod was suffering
with stomach pain and scheduled for more tests in the hospital on
Monday. But he disregarded my concern and, like the tiger he could
be, insisted we go.
After settling into our room, we went down to the dining room
to sit with our guests. My close friend Susan, with her latest escort,
and Helen and Edwin Watson were already there. Why was there an
extra chair next to Rod’s?
Our table, draped in white damask, was set with gleaming
stemware, gold and white china, and the clear vases of white tulips
I’d asked for. The blooms, so tender to my touch.
White tulips. They were on the table the night Rod proposed
and he brought them to the hospital more than twenty years ago when
our daughter Jessica was born. I didn’t know then that white tulips
were symbols of forgiveness, rebirth, and hope. Or how important
that would be to my future.
The sounds of hushed voices, laughter, and tinkling silverware
filled the ballroom. When Rod pulled a fistful of pain pills from his
pocket and tossed them down with Scotch, I shuddered. For him,
pain pills could unleash the tiger and trigger unpredictable behavior.
Now more than ever, I needed the comfort of being with these good
friends. Not the person about to appear.

Professional Reviews

A Most Memorable Story
This novel was a thoroughly enjoyable escape for me. Lindsay takes us on an adventure that is extraordinary. From Beacon Hill
to Greece, she seeks love and a new dimension of her career as an artist. The question is can her new romance be sustained?
There is passion, intrigue, wonderful description of both charming Boston and the exotic places in the Mediterranean where Lindsay
travels with Les - her lover. I loved being a part of Lindsay’s journey. Marcia Chellis has once again written a compelling novel. She is an
excellent writer.

Warm, Romantic, Compelling
Love Letters in the Sand is a warm, romantic and compelling story. The author captured the internal beauty and compassion of the heroine and her struggle to adapt to life after love. Her words flow gently into the readers heart as we experience the character's highs and lows. I encourage you to set aside time to enjoy each page and the bountiful symbolism within.

Excellent Book
I bought this book because I liked the author's previous (Girls of Winnetka) and this one was even better for me because of the exotic locales. I almost immediately became involved with the characters and found that the story moved quickly and I was anxious to see where it was going and what would happen. She's a good writer and has once again written an interesting book. I recommend it.
