It had been three years since Joe’s death and Mary had been working her ass off pulling doubles, triples whatever she could get to make sure that they wanted for nothing. Ironic thing is all they all ever wanted was their mother around more. Bending over to pick up a dropped fork Mary comes up a little lightheaded and nearly loses her footing. Leaning on the counter she regains her balance but is overtaken by a sharp pain in her chest. It subsides after seeming as though it took forever.
Years of hard living and no health care was starting to catch up with her. Something she always’ knew would happen. She just always hoped that after living a life free from all the vices she had when she was a kid would someone cancel out the past. Life has a strange way of reminding people of their transgressions though. After catching her breathe she takes her apron off and goes into the living room. “Girls”, Mary calls out, “Put those books down for now and come in here”. The girls more than willingly drop their homework and hurry into the living room as Mary puts on a record and takes CJ by the hand. “I want you1dance with my little man here”. She continues as she fights back the ocean of tears building up inside of her. She looks down lovingly into CJ’s eyes.
