Chapter One
The Retrieval
RAIN SLAPPED DOWN hard against the stained glass windows
in rhythmic thuds and clinks which echoed throughout the room.
The only light came from a dying fire in the vaulted, stone fireplace,
and the occasional glow from the lightning.
Elizabeth surveyed the room from behind her highly polished
oak desk, knowing that this horrible drawn-out night would soon be
over. She had to keep her composure, for the outcome of tonight
would most certainly depend on it.
To ensure a smooth success, they had arranged everything
weeks in advance. She was just biding her time now, waiting for
Barick to send word. Sipping her coffee, Elizabeth watched the rain
as it fell against the window near her desk. She worried there was
something she might have missed. A tiny detail she overlooked.
She glanced at the gold framed picture on her right and slowly
exhaled. Fresh tears began to slide down her age-lined cheeks. The
woman and daughter in the photo were laughing at the camera; each
appeared to be tickling the other. The mother was young, strikingly
attractive, and it was obvious by gazing at the photo that the
daughter was going to follow suit. She had the same high
cheekbones as her mother, and that same naturally tan complexion.
A sudden knock on the library door made Elizabeth jump,
almost spilling hot coffee down her silk blouse. Wiping her eyes with
an embroidered handkerchief, Elizabeth composed herself before she
beckoned the individual to enter.
Light from the entryway spilled in when the door opened, but
was blocked when the man entered. His impressive height was
matched by his sleek, athletic build.
“Oh, Barick, I was just thinking about you. Have you received
word yet on the progress of the situation?” she asked, when he
stepped through the doorway.
“I just spoke to my son. He’s informed me that everything is
moving precisely on schedule.” He stoked the fire, then placed two
more logs on top. “How are you doing?” he asked, not taking his
eyes off the newly created flames.
She paused before answering, attempting with no luck to read
his thoughts. “I’m fine, why wouldn’t I be?” she lied, trying to sound
insulted by his question.
He looked up and briefly gazed into her eyes, as if he was trying
to see through her. He finally crossed to one of the English leather

chairs in front of her desk, and gracefully took a seat. She sensed
Barick was watching her closely for any change in emotions while he
answered her question. “Because we’re hours away from killing your
granddaughter.”
The reality of his words plunged like a knife deep into
Elizabeth’s chest, yet she refused to let it show. “We’re doing what
we have to do. If this doesn’t work, nothing will. I’m sure of it.” She
kept her voice calm and level, while her heart sank.
“You don’t fool me.” His eyes held nothing but compassion
when he spoke, “I know you’re hurting, Beth, we all do. Moreover,
Fayrel is confident this will work. Everyone knows what to do, so
nothing will go wrong.”
Elizabeth gazed back at the man she had called a friend for so
many years. “Yes, this is very hard.” She stood and went to the
window. “Did your son mention if Casey has had any more visions?”
“He only has proof of the one I mentioned earlier to you, but he
suspects she’s had several. There’s really no way to be sure.”
“I‘m worried she’ll experience one tonight. If that happens, she
might prevent us from doing what must be done,” Elizabeth said,
moving back to her desk.
“Tonight will work out, I’m confident of that. I also give you my
word it’ll be a clean shot. She’ll feel minimal pain.”
“What of the boy?” she asked, glancing at Casey’s picture.
“What about him?”
“Casey is about to give her life for this child. Therefore, I ask
you, what will become of the boy?”
Barick studied her for a moment then glanced away. “We’re
planning on wiping the events of tonight from his memory. He’ll be
fine, just confused.”
She nodded in approval. “I’ve already paid off the coroner. The
arrangements are all set. I’ll fly out first thing tomorrow to claim
Casey’s body before their doctors have had a chance to examine her.
When you get back, could you ensure Fayrel has everything ready by
the time we get back home?” Elizabeth knew she wasn’t telling him
anything he didn’t already know. Barick, nonetheless, nodded his
head in understanding.
The alarm on Barick’s watch beeped, bringing him slowly to his
feet. “It’s time,” he said. They both stared at one another. Their eyes
briefly exchanged all of the unasked questions and doubts.
“Be careful, and whatever happens…” her voice trailed off.
“I know.” His eyes softened. “I’ll send Hanna in to keep you
company.” With that, he spun quickly from Elizabeth, and left the
room.
