A book on environmental toxins and synthetic chemicals and the impact they have on human health.
My name is Edie Summers. I battled chronic fatigue syndrome (also referred to as CFS) on and off for many years. I got sick after having surgery, and then again after taking prescription sleep aids, extreme exposure to VOCs from paint, fire retardants, carpeting, and due to severe stress.
Environmental toxins are not to be taken lightly. There are about 100,000 synthetic chemicals in our environment, and only about 7% of them have been thoroughly tested. I urge you to get educated and be proactive about what you consume and what you are exposed to on a daily basis.
The following book is Chapter Two from my book The Memory of Health due out soon and available on Lulu and Amazon.com.
Excerpt
September 11, 2001: That day changed the world in every way imaginable. It
was a defining moment in history, of course, but also for a reason that maybe
didn’t register with most of us. Not only did countless people suffer at the
moment of the attacks, and their families to this day, but the men and women who rescued so many, the first responders, and people who cleaned up the aftermath paid a heavy, unseen price as well.
Thousands of firefighters, construction workers, and rescue workers who
worked tireless 18 hour days for 10 months, 7 days a week to clean up at
Ground Zero continue to complain of respiratory illness, including a chronic, soot-laden hacking known as "World Trade Center Cough.”
The fine particles, known as VOCS (volatile organic compounds) from the gases and vapor generated by the collapse of the towers included a toxic dust storm of asbestos, carpeting, and office equipment notorious for causing multiple chronic health complications and deaths. The gases from this deadly soup was compromised of hundreds of different poisonous chemicals, including dioxins, PCBs, asbestos, silica, benzene, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), manganese, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, oxides of nitrogen, and sulfur. The massive, unprecedented, toxic exposures that led to the WTC cough also posed serious long term risks for cancers, and multiple environmental illnesses.
The 9/11 first responders are also now facing cancer (including throat and
face), heart disease, respiratory disease, and neurological issues to name
some of the conditions. The First Responders Bill was recently passed that
will provide much needed medical coverage - except for cancer, which has not been accepted as potentially occurring due to extreme exposure to Ground Zero chemicals - for these brave people, who selflessly offered themselves to an overwhelming crisis with devastating aftereffects. Almost 10 years later, and now, instead of fighting for us, they are fighting for their own health and lives in many cases. At least they have received recognition on this level, finally, for what they have been through and continue to face.
