"Let's go," I said. "I hope the upstairs isn't this chilly."
"Come on, then," Nicole said enthusiastically. "I can't wait to see the rest of the house." Her gaze fixed on me, and she tilted her head. "I'll bet you'd love a place like this. Of course," she paused, a triumphant gleam in her eyes, "you'd never be able to afford it."
So that was it! Nicole had invited me to see the house so she could gloat. My sister was right. I could never afford to buy a house, much less a magnificent home like this one.
Nicole's lips curled into a satisfied smile. "How come you look so glum, little sister?"
As if she didn't know!
"If you want to tie up your life for thirty years and spend all your money on a house payment," I snapped, "then go right ahead. I prefer to spend my money having a little fun out of life."
"It costs the same whether you rent or buy," she said. "One bedroom overlooks the back yard. We can have cookouts on the patio, and you can use my new guest room upstairs when you visit."
I followed her, swallowing a lump in my throat. Somehow, I managed to get through the next hour as I trudged after Nicole from room to room.
Upstairs, the small, irregularly shaped rooms surprised me. The upper quarters all had sloping walls with dormers. All in all, though, the house was impressive. There was an immense basement. The last place we inspected was the patio; it was a tree-shaded dream, complete with a large man-made stream where water cascaded over large river rocks. The realtor had probably turned on the pump to further cement Nicole's desire for home ownership.
"So you're actually going to buy?" I asked as we retraced our steps down the hall to the front door. I turned the knob, and a sudden blast of wind caught the door, slamming it against the wall. I stumbled back from the force of the gale and thudded to the floor.
Pain shot through my shoulder, and I gasped.
Outside, the blue sky was serene, without a cloud to be seen. Where had this strong wind come from?
"Wendy!" Nicole shrieked. She pulled the door back to examine the wall for damage.
I looked up at her from the floor. "Hey, I didn't do it. The wind just took it out of my hands." I rubbed my shoulder gingerly. "You might ask if I'm hurt, Nicole."
She gave me a dirty look. "Are you?"
"I'll live," I snapped.
As I rose, irrational fear cut through me; something was here. I hadn't seen anything but the wispy shadows, but I knew evil lived here, was standing beside me.
I froze. A force locked my body in a vise and vacuumed the breath from my lungs. I gasped for air as darkness threatened to envelop me. Abruptly, the energy thrust me away, releasing me as quickly as it had gripped me. Static charges raked along my spine, and my heart pumped adrenaline through my veins: fight or flight.
