Jesse Burks rubbed his temples. The palm felt damp and clammy on his forehead. This was most unusual. In the nine years he had been teaching at Lincoln High, he had only been called to the office once before—and that was because his father had been rushed to the hospital in critical condition. But that time the principal had sent his secretary to the door. Was this worse news? What could be worse? His father had died before Jesse could say good-bye.
There was not a sound from his students as he left the room. His footsteps echoed all the way down the narrow hallway on the buffed, waxed tile floor.
“Come in, Jesse. Sit there.”
Jesse perched in the chair closest to the desk and braced himself. This must be the way errant students felt, but they usually knew exactly what the subject under discussion was to be—he had not a clue.
