A hauntingly beautiful love story set in the north of England, just after the second world war.
Foreword I received this letter and manuscript from a relative quite recently. My Dear uncle Frank I have enclosed a MS for you to look at, it is quite old and was discovered by a friend of mine after her ancient aunt died. I read it and was most moved by it. I wondered if you had any way of finding out if it had ever been published, with your connections and all! Gerry says he hasn't heard of it, I thought you might be interested because the whole events of its account are placed in your birthplace Why did you never tell us of all the ghostly goings on out there? Anyway, just thought you might like to read it. I have no idea who this James Goddard was but it all happened just after the war, before my time but you were born during the war, weren't you? It's rather sad, not really your time period and all but Gerry said to send it anyway. Let me know what you think of it. Lots of love, Veronica. My niece is barely out of 'Mills and Boone' and her taste for the torrid romantic at first stalled me but her brother's input caused me to at least read it. Gerry is prone to a sound reason and the word 'Gothic' is not even in his vocabulary. So I read it. As far as I could discover, even with my connections, it had not been published, at least not under the name it appeared to have been written by and no suggested title brought any positive search results either. I thought I might use it for my next project for a capricious turn of events was plaguing my present work and I felt I needed a break. I am prone to that, not really procrastination but more self preservation. If something is going badly I will leave it for a while and work on something entirely different which is probably why I have so many books waiting on my desk for editing and such. Veronica was right, Gerry was right. Once I started I got caught up in the whole story and couldn't put it down. Needless to say I determined to make it my own work, change the setting perhaps but I couldn't. The more I thought on it, the more I made notes and deliberated, the more I realized I shouldn't touch it at all. Perhaps this James Goddard had not been able to publish it but I think more that he never tried to. The difficulties in having a manuscript published are sometimes insurmountable but I had a feeling that this one would have been accepted, if he'd tried. I don't wonder why he didn't try, I think I know but I am determined to see it so. I have left it in tact, changed nothing. I have even kept the original names and places in, perhaps someone out there who may read it could shed some light on the author and people represented. I hope so, I would like to know if it is true or a complete fiction, someday. Frank James on behalf of James Goddard. It is short but complete, it is my hope that it touches the reader as much as it did myself. I don't know if there was a real James Goddard, but I do know there is a real Ladybower and yes it is a reservoir in the county of Derbyshire in England UK, where I rambled as a teenager. Yes it too has had its fair share of UFO's and even many sightings of ghostly planes. Fascinating eh! Frank J. 'Does love go beyond the grave?', asks the writer of this haunting tale. Only the reader may know the answer, and even then...!

'With closed eyes I see them gather.
I feel the call booming from the foundered tower
and I know
that should it sound again
I would return to Ladybower.
