Sherlock Holmes is not particularly surprised when Mrs Foulkes seeks his help to escape her impending murder, for he has had clients in that situation before. But when she explains that she has arranged her own death, the case takes on the unusual features that attract the Great Detective instantly.
The body lying on its back before us was unquestionably that of the man who had attempted to kill Holmes and I with explosives, at Glenbury Gardens. He wore the same dark clothing, although his hat was gone, and the hare lip was a livid scar on his pallid face. Strangely, it crossed my mind that what could be seen of his expression in death was softer than that he had worn in life.

'That is Caulder,' Holmes said.
'How can you tell? We were far away from him at the theatre, and he wore a mask.'
'But it did not cover his mouth, and I remember from the poster aboard Barnes' barge that he has a hare lip.'
Caulder watched us with cold eyes, the eyes of an executioner, and produced a vesta from his pocket. He lit the bundle he held and paused until he was satisfied that it burned well. His face took on a crooked smile that was somehow terrible in its lack of warmth or compassion, as he threw the bundle, not at us but higher than we could see.
We heard glass splinter as an upstairs window was smashed, followed by the dull thud of something hitting the floor of a room above. Caulder looked up, as if admiring his work. Without a further glance at us, he turned and strode back the way he had come.
'Quickly, Watson!' Holmes already had a grip on my shoulder, propelling me towards the cellar. 'He seeks to bring the house down upon us. This is our only chance.'
