In response to a message from their man in Tunisia, an agent of the ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three is dispatched to escort a defector to the UK. On arrival the agent is not contacted, but becomes the target of mysterious assassins.
The ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three receives a top priority message from Klemperer, their agent-in-place in Tunisia. He is sheltering a high-ranking North Korean political official who wishes to defect to the UK, and an escort is required to see him safely to London.
Sector Three conclude that the defector would be a valuable asset, having much to reveal about his country's military intentions. An agent, code-named Robert Lane, is sent to accompany him to Britain. This is a 'recently discovered' adventure of Sherlock Holmes, in which he is summoned to a country estate to expose the murderous 'ghost' of a man executed centuries before.
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are summoned to Theobald Grange, the home of the overly-superstitious Lady Heminworth. Her Ladyship is on the brink of nervous collapse, a condition brought about by the recent murder of her husband and elder son, apparently by a man executed centuries ago. Now she is to be the next victim, and Holmes discovers that the motive originates with the banishment of her other son. His adversary seems unaffected by gunfire and is able to take flight and disappear, but Holmes knows that the threat is not supernatural.

Sir Gordon Thurston, the incoming Head of MI6, has been abducted in Paris. This is found to be the work of an ex-KGB general, whose objective is to restore the Soviet regime in Russia - unless Sector Three can intervene.
Robert Lane, an agent for the ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three, is sent to locate the abductors of Sir Gordon Thurston, the incoming Head of MI6. He discovers that this is the work of an ex-KGB General, Pilatov, whose purpose is to unite a number of powerful pro-Soviet groups into a single force to bring about the restoration of the old regime in Russia. Pilatov has kidnapped Sir Gordon as a demonstration to the other factions of what can be achieved to support their aims, as well as to gain information about British Intelligence by interrogation. Sherlock Holmes pursues a ruthless and elusive foe.
Inspector Lestrade brings Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson an account of six murders. The only fact common to them all is that the victims had all served terms of imprisonment for serious crimes. A second rediscovered case from the files of Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes agrees to take the case of Mr Avery Quill, whose daughter has mysteriously disappeared. A short time later the girl's body is discovered, accompanied by a visiting card bearing the head of the mythological Gorgon. No sooner have Holmes and Watson begun their investigation, than Mr Quill is also killed in the same brutal fashion, and an identical card found nearby.
