Chapter One
School Daze
Everyone has at least one memory of school. Memories of recess, dusty chalkboards, the nice (or evil) lunch lady, or a best friend are at the top of the list. These memories make us long for those long crazy days in which the clock seemed to stand still while waiting for the school Christmas party to start. I often wish I could go back and live my childhood over again.
But wait! Because I’m a teacher, I get to do that Monday through Friday. Lucky me.
I am not alone in that I played school as a child, and wished I could be a teacher. Yet never in my wildest dreams did I even dare dream I would become a teacher. Up until the age of twenty-three I was scooping Ice cream at Brahms, packing lingerie at Kellwood’s, and wrestling kids at a daycare for $3.75 an hour. That, of course was a pretty good wage in 1980.
Unbeknownst to me, I was destined to become a teacher. I had far too many people involved in molding my life.
