As a boy, Schmuel survived the Holocaust but as a man he cannot. In New Hampshire in the 1970s, a murder, a married woman and an old friend rob him of the simple life and put his own in peril.
Over thirty years, Schmuel’s journey takes him from Auschwitz to New Hampshire. But not all who leave the Holocaust are survivors. Some are criminals. And even a small New Hampshire town, where everybody knows everybody, can have dirty secrets. Schmuel, now Sam Miller, is a forty year old divorcee seeking the quiet life away from his boyhood horrors. But a call from a fellow Auschwitz survivor drags his past back in front of him. Is there a Nazi war criminal hiding in plain sight? Sam becomes a hunter, but may also be the hunted. Martha becomes his partner, despite his love for another. They find themselves in a fight for survival.

Schmuel's Journey is an eye opening thriller set in a bucolic, small college town in New Hampshire. On the surface,Henniker is a perfect place to live, but there is an undercurrent. A murder puts the community on edge, academic careers are threatened and horrors of the past become part of the present.
As the carefully constructed plot unfolds, it marries suspense and history. The pace builds slowly and keeps the reader engrossed. The characters, some deeply flawed, are complex and interesting. This is a well told, fast moving and intriguing story. Highly recommended.
