A Hyper Competitive Job Market
In December 2007, the United States was thrust into the country’s worst recession since the Great Depression. It’s now 2012 and according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession officially ended in June 2009. However, as most workers in the United States realize, these statistics do not begin to tell the entire story regarding the challenges they currently face while struggling to stay employed or seek new employment. The current job market has nearly collapsed with over 14 million currently unemployed spanning across nearly every segment of the economy. The manufacturing and service sectors of the US labor market continue to be amongst the hardest hit as more and more jobs are exported to foreign countries such as China, Mexico and India each year.
How To Find A Job: When There Are No Jobs is a necessary and effective guide for those who are in the process of making a career change or looking for a new job and want to survive and prosper in today’s hyper competitive job market. In order to conduct a successful job search in a weak labor market, it is imperative that you first identify and determine your individual career path. Once established, your career path will act as a map to further guide you through your job search.

There are a myriad of complex theories and explanations for the current state of our weakened economy and the lackluster job market that continues to plague our country. The devastating collapse of our housing market when without mercy thrust millions of families into foreclosure, homelessness and subsequent bankruptcy has had a profoundly negative impact on every worker’s job security. The United States has experienced a massive number of job losses over a period of several years, affecting millions of people in the country’s worst economic downturn since the 1930’s. Despite what appears to be an economic recovery beginning in June 2009, the country’s dismal lag in job creation is the slowest post-recession rate since the Great Depression and has added more fuel to an already out of control firestorm of joblessness.
Many US companies continue to restructure and in some cases have moved their manufacturing operations to foreign countries seeking lower labor costs. Some unfortunate companies unable to compete in today’s global marketplace have completely shut down their operations and have been forced to eliminate entire workforces. All of these changes continue to have a devastating effect upon nearly all individuals who make up the American workforce. US companies in an effort to become more productive and compete with lower manufacturing costs have invested millions of dollars on state of the art automation. Manufacturing data indicates that US companies have in fact become more productive as the result of automation coupled with improved manufacturing processes. However, competition across the globe for lower cost products and services has forced American companies to continue to export an ever-increasing number of manufacturing and service type jobs to Mexico and companies overseas. As a result, fewer products are being manufactured in the US causing a continued and precipitous loss of manufacturing and service jobs in this country.

No Nonsense Approach to Job Hunting
I found this book to be a no nonsense approach to job hunting. This is not a book for the person with a "victim mentality" toward life. I am self-employed and found Rega's approach refreshing. If one truly is serious about finding their professional path, I would recommend this read.
One quote that stuck with me has to do with finding the right contact person: "Making contact with a hiring authority is an important key to the success of your search. View this essential step of the process as if you were a private investigator trying to locate a missing person." This really spoke to me. In business, often times it is this level of tenacity one must strive for in order to achieve success. Thank you Mr. Rega.
Even If You Love Your Job!
I'm not looking for a job...BUT...I thoroughly enjoyed "How to Find a Job: When There Are No Jobs" and find that the processes Mr. Rega describes translate well into many areas of life. Truly defining what we want is key to obtaining it! So glad he took the time...all fourteen years of it...to write such a timely book! It's high on my recommendation list to anyone...job seeker or not.
The long-awaited solution
As a university lecturer, I'm often appalled at the lack of real jobs for graduates in the UK. I'm impressed by this book as I think Paul Rega has successfully addressed the jobseeker themselves as the path to their own solution. He presents a framework for personal career success unlike any book I've come across. I recommend it to all my students and graduates, as well as anybody else seeking a fulfilling career. I give it 5 stars!
