After bringing peace and unification to the World as President of the Republoic, Brad retires to his ranch to enjoy life and his children by his numorous wives. It was not to be when two fo his wives die in an explosion coming back from an awards ceremony. Another is killed when three of them went to investigate what happened, finding it was no accident.

Aliens have made contact with her. What she tells him spurs him to go into space. The wives agree with him .

 Contacting the people that built a faster than light spacecraft on Luna, they have their own craft built by them named "Lightning".

The Earth had become so parnoid about bacteria in outer space that could kill them, they passed so many laws preventing anyone that went out there after the Martian bug scare from ever returning to Earth. Luna was no longer considered off planet becoming part of the Republic of Terra. Once they left, they might never be allowed to return.

The Lightning had to be built in secret because it was illegal to have an FTL craft built. Brad and his wives kept this a secret from his wife Michele who had taken over as World President after Brad retired. She could not be trusted because of her views.
