Chapter One
"What else could go wrong?" Sheila wondered looking at the doctors tending to those injured when the jetliner went down. They were lucky in one aspect; the captain drank so much coffee on this trip that he went to the bathroom when the others in the cockpit were blinded by the nuclear explosion. They had been trying to raise the control tower at LAX having just crossed into California and were preparing to land, but the normal instructions were not forthcoming.
The captain, who was also the pilot, took control. Realizing he was almost out of fuel, he tried to reach other main airports but none answered. Not wanting to go through the radioactive cloud he banked sharply turning the jetliner away from LA. The blast knocked the radio out so he couldn't reach anyone. Not wanting to chance colliding with anyone by arriving unannounced in others airspace, he decided to crash land in the desert.
Dropping their air speed down, he looked for what looked like empty desert with no hills to run into. Sheila recalled hearing, being called up to the cockpit and the captain telling her and the chief flight steward what was going on. She had been shocked but did what she was told getting everything ready for a crash landing.
Sheila made sure all the passengers were ready and in the right position before strapping in her self. She looked down the aisle seeing the chief flight steward strap in just behind the cockpit. Glancing over at Tonya, she gave her a guarded smile as her best friend and cohort in partying when they weren't flying together, sat down next to Sheila.
"Why are we crash landing?" Liz whispered making Sheila realize she didn't know.
"The pilot is the only one able to see, there has been a nuclear explosion in LA of some kind. The radio is not working, so the pilot almost out of fuel is putting us down in the desert. He feels that is the safer thing to do." Sheila whispered back.
"A Nu-clear explosion?" Liz stuttered almost in a normal tone causing several of the passengers to look back.
"Get back in your crash positions!" Sheila barked making Liz be quiet. They did what she said but Sheila could hear them whispering to each other.
Sheila heard Liz muttering a prayer as the jetliner dipped lower and lower. She knew it was any second now when they would make contact with the surface.
Everything seemed to go okay when they first touched down with the exception of a little bouncing around and people screaming. Then the left wing hit something spinning them around into a large rock that killed all those in the cockpit along with the chief steward putting her in charge. Sheila liked the chief steward having flown under him for a long time. Being the senior flight attendant put her in charge, something she didn't like.
Several of the first class passengers were trying to use cell phones to reach someone but they didn't seem to be working out here. Most of the passengers were in a state of shock over what happened. She was fortunate that everyone in coach class jumped in to help with the injured and remove the dead. Most still didn't know why they crash landed, so she climbed on a rock and spoke.
"Can I have your attention?" Sheila yelled as all faces turned to face her. Talking stopped, even those still trying to use their cell phones shut them off.
"There seems to have been some kind of nuclear explosion in LA," she stopped talking as everyone started saying things to others.
"Why did we crash here instead of going to San Francisco or some other place?" One voice yelled above the crowd. Sheila saw the speaker was none other than one of the first class passengers, Marshall.
The doctors kept treating the injured. Sheila started to answer when an Earthquake made her fall off the rock as others screamed when the ground moved. Sheila waited for the earthquake to subside before trying to get back on the rock. It seemed like one was occurring every second but not as powerful. She climbed back on the rock and spread her feet apart to maintain balance.
"The captain turned us away from LA so we wouldn't fly through the radioactive cloud." Sheila paused as several made comments about radiation then went silent. She spoke again, "He was unable to contact any other airports and worried about colliding with other craft, so he reached the decision to put us down in the desert. That is why we are here."
Sheila went silent to let her words sink in to each of them; then everyone seemed to be talking at once. Once she let them talk it all over, she spoke again.
"Now all we have to do is take care of the injured and I'm sure the authorities will be out here soon. The pilot broadcast several maydays before we hit the ground. Now everyone stay calm and we will get through this." Sheila started to step down from the rock when Marshall yelled out again.
"How do you know anyone will come out here? You said so yourself the radio wasn't working. My cell phone gets no reception here for some reason. Maybe no one heard our mayday?"
Sheila didn't have a real answer, so she decided to wing it. "I'm sure that someone saw a jetliner of this size come out of the sky and they will be organizing a rescue party as we speak." She heard several murmurs of agreement but could see doubt on most of the faces.
"Is the airline going to reimburse us for all the money I'm losing being stranded out here in the middle of nowhere?" Marshall yelled just as she started down from the rock making her turn around and get back up on the rock.
"What the airline does or doesn't do, I have no clue about that. I'm sure your lawyers will take that up with the airline when we get out of here. Now, everyone that is not injured, return to your seats so we can tend the wounded and figure out how we can survive until help arrives." They were all in shock even after they realized they had survived.
This time, she stepped off the rock down next to the British Officer that had helped bring the wounded out of the plane so the doctors could do what they could to treat them. Standing next to him was the tall gray haired African-American that had helped carry out the dead and wrap them in whatever plastic they could find.
"My lady, can we help you more?" The British officer said. Sheila recalled his name was Jim something. She hesitated then spoke, "The doctors are all busy trying to save the injured. Right now, I'm going to see what food we have left on board. I have no idea how to heat it up without a microwave even if there is some."
Sheila's face fell, the load of caring for the passengers felt like she was carrying the world on her shoulders. She didn't like it but did it.
"We can get a fire going for you to heat up or cook what you find, my lady." Jim remarked pointing to him and Tom.
"I could use some help," a tired Sheila responded. Thankful that some of the passengers wanted to help, while others expected her and the other stewardesses to wait on them like they did on the flight over here.
"What about radiation?" One passenger asked. Sheila could only shrug her shoulders having no answer. She could see the fear in Liz's face when she had no answer, Liz fought to overcome her fear putting on the fake smile they all tended to wear.
The passengers not injured or already tended to; worked their way into the crowded jetliner returning to their seats. The very back section had been ripped off during the crash separated by several feet. Sheila climbed up into the section that contained whatever food was left with Liz on her heels.
Tonya was up trying to get the passengers situated in their seats so she could do a head count. First class passengers were running her ragged with their requests for this or that. Most of the time she had to tell them, "Sorry, but there is none." She found every blanket aboard the craft feeling it would get cool during the night in the desert having been out here many times on her day off. Those in coach and business class didn't seem to mind that most of the blankets went to the first class passengers, even though a few grumbled about it.
Sheila turned to Liz saying, "There isn't much but we will use everything including what was damaged in the crash. Everyone will get a little if we work it right. This trip was supposed to feed the passengers one more time, so we will have to make do."
Liz nodded and started to do what she said. She knew they would be lucky if they stretched it that far. Her and the other stewardess would be lucky if they got a bite or two. "I guess I'm starting my diet a little earlier than I planned." Liz remarked with a chuckle. Sheila agreed with her knowing neither one really needed to diet.
They took what they found out to Jim and Tom. They used the metal trays that used to contain the little bottles of alcohol to cook in. They placed the half frozen items on them to cook or warm up if it had been previously cooked. The tiny alcohol bottles had already been claimed by the doctors to use in their caring of the injured. Even though several of the passengers wanted them to deal with what was going on, Sheila gave all of them to the doctors.
"Not much is there, my lady?' Jim remarked as he looked at the food cooking.
"It will have to do until help gets here." Sheila responded. He could hear the weariness in her voice and see it in her face that this was all bringing her down.
"We are here to help." Tom said seeing the same thing in her face. Jim nodded in agreement.
"Thank you, two!" Sheila responded
