The public education system is a “system”. As such; there is little room for individuality and difference. If you commit to being an engaged parent, your child can be successful in a system that is designed to keep children in categories and boxes for ease of management.
Why is parent engagement in public education such an essential element to student success?
We must recognize and accept that public education is a bureaucratic system. We do that we can learn the rules of engagement and successfully navigate our child to academic achievement.
As parents we have a responsibility to know our children’s teachers and principals. We have the responsibility of knowing the initiatives that our district is considering. Knowing the options we have for education our children. We need to have a voice in key decisions at our schools and at the district level. When we send our children to a public school, we must also take on the commitment to be engaged in the education process.
