The most important part of networking is the follow up. That’s when the real networking starts when you do the follow up. A lot of people that goes to networking events don’t have a clue about the importance of the follow up. The purpose of doing the follow up is to start the process of building solid relationships with your potential new connections. When I am networking I make sure when I am collecting individual business cards that I make sure I take the time to do the follow up. Soon the networking events are over I make sure I start the follow up soon several hours later or the next day. I don’t wait for the person to do the follow up with me, I will lead the task to do the follow up. Networking really do not start at the networking events but networking actually starts with the follow up. Some individuals have a misunderstanding about networking concept. The development of building a strong network requires making those connections that will sustain more than an introduction. To develop a strong network you need the ingredients of those connections and the support that are requiring maintaining them. An initial meeting or contact with someone does not establish a connection unless you make an effort to do your follow-up of some kind. The follow-up must suggest a mutual interest in developing a meaningful supportive relationship.
