Preface
“My name is Kate O’Connor, Irish through and through and cocky, some say sexy, most say cute. I do a good job filling in my jeans in the right places. I’m five foot six, one hundred and twenty pounds, brown shoulder length hair that I prefer wearing in a ponytail and brown eyes, I’ve never chosen to have a breast enhancement even though I just creep into a size “B” bra. The men seem to like me just the way I am.
I’m 34, single and love what I do for a living. After graduating from the University of Florida with my B.S. in Journalism, my goal was to specialize in documentaries. My career is, and has been, as a freelance documenter with no mission too far or too dangerous.
Directly out of college I became a freelance reporter for United Press International working in Florida, my home state, as well as Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. After working the local areas of the south, I became wanderlust. It was at that time that our troops attacked Iraq and the United Press was in need of foreign correspondents. They called and offered me the opportunity which required that I go through the Special Forces civilian training boot camp for journalists going into war zones.
It was six weeks of extensive training in hand to hand combat and weapons handling. There was a training segment if taken hostage, which encompassed various methods of escape. The intense practices of escape, learning how to read your enemy and survival training left an indelible impression that has proven invaluable. Because of my prior experiences with flying helicopters with my Uncle Mike, they ran me through Huey flight training for six days, just in case. While in the boot camp, I met Morgan Donnelly, my assigned military partner who was also going to Iraq as a military correspondent. We both completed the boot camp and shipped out together. We spent two years reporting on the front lines in Iraq where we had to be continuously on the lookout for terrorists. Anything and everything was suspect, the cars parked on the sides of the road, buildings we walked past, roof tops for snipers, any non-paved surfaces for land mines, people we’d pass for body bombs and military who might flip out and start shooting at anyone and everyone for no apparent reason.
The two of us have completed several documentaries since our business debuted in 2008. Our first documentary How Deep the Fall won us an IDA, International Documentary Association award, which was produced on the inner city streets of Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia. This documentary brought out the extensive training we gained while in Iraq. It was scheduled to take three months but instead it ended up at nine. While fending off countless attacks against us by the homeless people living on the streets and those who prey on them, we caught pneumonia, the flu twice and continuous cases of dysentery. We learned where every public bathroom was in every town we worked. The sadness of this documentary was learning how fragile life can be--one minute you’re living a comfortable middle-class life style to finding yourself destitute and living on the streets without much chance of climbing out.
One of the most profound lessons from our research was the difference between today’s hand-outs to post-depression programs for the poor. In 1929 through 1937, work programs were put in place by the government to allow the homeless a chance to work themselves out with pride from the disgrace of homelessness. Today there’s simply welfare and the perpetuation of the idea that it’s okay because it’s a normal event of life. This in many cases digs a deeper hole from which the poor must climb. It’s a shame this dilemma still exists in the world’s wealthiest country.
Our next documentary, The Vatican, covered the scandal brought to the Catholic Religion post the exposure of the Priests’ abuse of children. It wasn’t as dangerous as it was heartbreaking for both of us. We followed the trail from the Vatican to the courts, then to the priests and last to the victims who will forever live with the scar.
Our last documentary, Deep Truth, involved an archeological dig in the Negev Region in Southern Israel. In this documentary, we had encounters with the Palestinian Hezbollah, the Mossad of Israel, the Israeli Air Force, Egypt, and the United States. It was dangerous yet intriguing it deepened our understanding of the Middle East conflicts and history as well as finding love. But that’s a story for another day. It led us deep into a crater where we were able to document the origin of man.
Morgan, my best friend and business partner is five foot seven, stocky but by no means fat, brown eyed with auburn hair worn in a ponytail like mine most of the time. She’s feisty and fun-loving, 32 years old, and turns a lot of heads at Uncle Mike’s Saloon when she’s wearing her tight fitting jeans, tank top and cowboy boots.
We help Uncle Mike behind the bar when the need arises. I’m proud to say that the two of us have a following, Morgan has the biker types, and me, well I guess I like the quiet ones with a sense of humor who want more out of life than an hour in the sack. Although having talent in that area is certainly a plus.
I’ve said it before about Morgan, and she won’t deny it. She acts as if she’s hormone deficient supplementing the deficiency with testosterone. Her motto is simple; screw with me once, I’ll kick your ass, twice, forget about it. Twice isn’t going to happen.
