Excerpt
A great earthquake had split the world apart.
Animals wandered about in fear and confusion, most having been separated from their families and friends, they were shaken and afraid, and they began to slowly look around, searching for a familiar face.
A young Lynx was peering through the bushes – although she was much shaken, she had begun to look curiously around her, slowly venturing out from beneath the tree under which she was hiding. She began searching for her friends or family, when sometime later she had found no one, she sat down and began to cry, she felt so alone, crying until she was exhausted and silent. As she lay there she realised she was being watched, looking around again at the surrounding area, she looked up and saw a young dragon sitting on the nearby rock.
"Why are you crying?" said the dragon.
"I thought there was nobody left, that I would be all alone,” said the Lynx.
"I'm sure there are more of us,” said the dragon "we can stick together while we search if you like, my name is Zac."
"My name is Mishka,” said the Lynx “where will we begin to look?"
"Why don't we start out in the morning, we can make it an adventure as we search for others." said Zac.
They curled up together preparing for sleep, Mishka with her head on Zac’s belly. They slept peacefully in each other’s company, feeling secure for the first time since the quake.
Waking early just as the sun was rising to a new day, they sat for a few moments looking out over the devastation caused by the quake. The ground was cracked open, trees were upturned, and everything seemed to be coated with dust of some kind. Feeling very hungry, they searched for food, and soon found a large bush filled with berries, although most of them were high up.
"Oh, how will we ever get anything to eat?” cried Mishka.
Laughing, Zac began to beat his wings, slowly rising to the top branches, he began to pick the berries. Bringing a handful down to Mishka, they ate until they were full, and then set off upon their journey.
