The cell phone buzzing in Crey’s pocket took him by surprise as he made his way through Richmond International. He had turned it on soon after getting off the plane and was not accustomed to having a mobile on him. After talking to Jack Greene the week prior, however, he decided that it would be easier for them to hook when he arrived if he had one. It was a cheap pay-as-you go phone that he picked up before leaving Seattle, but he didn’t need anything fancy.
Slinging his bag over a shoulder he dug through his pockets and finally found it. Damn thing, he thought, Good way to give away your position.
Flipping it open quickly, he quietly spoke into the phone.
“Hello.”
“Have a good life, Sergeant Higgins.”
It was a simple phrase that met his ear—but one he would never remember. His last conscience feeling was a crawling sensation across his scalp.
A pre-set sequence of events went into motion and he slipped the cell phone into his pocket and walked absently to the Rent-Ready-Rental center. Everything had been taken care of in advance, and his assigned vehicle was waiting. As if on auto-pilot he drove from the airport to a roadside rest area on I-295. He then made the usual five minute restroom pit-stop, mostly to re-con the area, and then went directly and opened the trunk. As the lid came up the cell phone buzzed once again.
“Bracket three and fire for effect,” the command was clear and Crey duplicated it precisely. “All targets are located and identified. The package includes coordinates and means to neutralize first two points of contact. Proceed to POC 1.”
Crey unzipped the duffle bag lying in the trunk compartment and took out a sheet of paper that was enclosed in a baggie. He quickly looked over the green Austrian-made Steyr SSG sniper rifle that was broken down inside the bag. Checking to ensure there was a silencer included, he closed the lid and sat in the car to read the instructions in detail before starting the engine:
