Five minutes past noon brought heavier rains and roaring winds from the west. The forecast showed lines of storms racing across the southern states with just a few breaks in between. The barn was being battered and looked as if it would fall at any time. The powerful winds had pulled the doors open and was threatening to pull them off their hinges.
“I have to go secure the barn Sarah” Timothy stated as he had been observing the storm and the impact. He ran out of the house into the storm that was packing winds that seemed as if they could lift up a tank and throw it into another state.
It was no good for Sarah to try to talk him out of it as he was out the door before he even finished his sentence. And it was way too windy to yell out to him. The wind would drown out her cries and carry them never to be heard. So she got Jimmy and sat on the couch watching the weather closely hoping Tim would hurry back to the safety of their home.
Fallen Pieces
The weather was relentless. It was not improving any, that’s for sure. As two super cells collided just west of their farm, the evening just got much darker.
The door seemed to push with an invisible force equal to a semi truck pushing it. Timothy looked around trying to figure out how to get the doors shut and what would keep them that way. Then he ran inside the barn to get the tractor. He drove the old green John Deere out and was just about to line it up with the doors just as the old barn gave up the fight to stand and slowly fell to the right. Timothy could only watch as the walls of the barn gave to the tormenting winds. The roof came down to sit on the pile of lumber, scattered hay and torn rustic boards.
“Why God?” is all Timothy could muster to holler as he watched the barn dissipate. He drove the tractor through the fierce winds to the front of the house. Then soaked and upset, he ran to the house. The barn was no longer a fixer upper, but just another full project to be added to a lengthy list.
