Excerpt
The sleek, low, black-hulled speedboat lay gently drifting in the darkness of a Mediterranean night. The water lapped against the fiberglass hull as it let the sea direct her at will. Known locally as a cigarette boat, its long low profile shape was almost invisible as it wallowed in the small troughs. The absence of running lights marked it as a smuggler. The moon slid slowly between dark clouds reducing visibility until the sea and sky merged into an inky blackness.
The two figures clad in black wetsuits stood perfectly still as they surveyed the lights glinting on the distant coastline that was their ultimate destination. Occasionally one of the two would do a three hundred and sixty degree scan. The binoculars they used were military issue, turning the lights and surroundings to a ghostly green. No sign of the customs helicopter or any of the numerous patrol craft they knew would be lurking somewhere within the darkness.
Behind them lay the North African coast, to their front, shining in the distance, was the Spanish mainland. Somewhere off to the East were the Balearic Islands where hopefully the second boat, a small Spanish fishing boat laden with its precious cargo would make a successful landfall.
They were about to enter Spanish territorial waters where they were hoping to stir up some lively interest.
