Ages ago, when the stars were brighter, and the hills were young, all manner of fantastic beasts lurked under the shadows cast by the twisted trees of the Grunwald Forest. Most of these creatures had thick fur; some had tough skin or hard scales. A few were gigantic, and some were puny. Many had sharp claws, fierce horns atop their heads, or drooling fangs.
As you might guess, most of these creatures were not very nice. They would tease each other, play tricks on each other, fight with each other, steal things from each other, and sometimes, if they were really hungry, even eat each other (yuck)!
This was really bad for the smaller creatures. No one wants to be bossed around all the time, have their toys taken away, or worst of all, served as dinner!
The smallest folk living in the shadowy Grunwald Forest were called Niblings. Niblings are skinny and short – just above knee-high to an adult human. I don’t think they picked that name – I think the Goblins picked it for them. Because Niblings were small and weak, they didn’t have a lot of toys or even clothes.
