Delsea accepted the challenge before Cano could react. She took a short, quick step forward as she judged the distance and the wind, then cast her spear toward the stranger.
In obvious disbelief, the big man watched the spear arc over a distance far beyond an ordinary spear's range. At the last moment, he realized the spear could and would reach him. Just before it landed, he twisted to the side, but not before the tip grazed his hairy chest, leaving a thin red line of blood.
He was furious. He had been attacked and by a woman. He had been bloodied. His rage exploded like a storm, dark and flashing with fury. Even his own men shrank from the ferocity he exhibited. He jumped up and down, waving his spear, as he screamed at the woman who dared attack him. He turned to his men, still in a frenzy, screaming, jumping, shouting, and waving of his spear. Soon the other two men joined him in his frenzy. They ranted and raved as they prepared to attack.
Cano wished he had brought his spear thrower instead of just the canohawk. A spear was a much better weapon for this type of fighting. He noticed Dola had stepped up on his other side, and now all three of them presented a united front to the men raging in front of them.
The leader turned from his men, but then he seemed to stumble and dropped his spear. Then he began shaking. He fell to the ground and attempted to get back up but couldn't. His body started to shake uncontrollably. Bloody foam bubbled from his mouth. Horrible sounds escaped his throat. Inhuman sounds. The sounds of a dying animal. Finally, he lay still on the ground with blood oozing from his eyes and nose.
Delsea knew the snake's magic had worked. She felt something she had never thought she would experience. Something she had not wanted to experience. She had killed a man. A bad man, but still a man. Her power had grown. She stepped forward raised her spear thrower with the second magic spear fitted, and shouted. It was a cry of victory. It came from deep within her, from a place she didn't know existed. And it echoed across the land. It was primeval and true unto itself. And true unto her. And it heralded a new Delsea.
Cano was both shocked and relieved. He was glad one of the enemies lay dead. He took no joy in a man's death, yet he was grateful this man had died. Unfortunately, there were still two left.
