PREFACE
This is a book that I felt compelled to write a few years ago, as I found myself in a season of ministering to a number of husbands who were struggling with finding a balance between loving God, and being the husband that they were called to be. There were also men I spoke with who were engaged, and wanted to know some of the secrets for having and maintaining a successful marriage. The husband’s role has changed throughout history, especially during and after the Women’s Movement. Many men want to know the answer to the following questions, “What is my role in the family?” “How can I contribute to a lasting marriage? How can I show my wife love and affection? I believe that I cover all of these questions, and more in this book.
To be quite honest, every marriage is going to experience some serious challenges and difficulties. From a man’s perspective, I believe that one of the primary reasons for the break-up of so many marriages today is the failure of men to understand and apply the specific roles and responsibilities God has given to the husband. When a man is out of the will of God, he is a menace to himself and everyone else. When we consider Jonah the prophet, we see how he just about brought a whole ship down because of his disobedience. Many husbands do the same to their marriages. Their marriages are in trouble because they are unwilling to obey God's commandments to them.
That was my story for a while. You see, I am the product of two failed marriages. I have committed adultery, I have lied, cheated, manipulated, and hurt the people I loved the most, all because I turned my heart away from God. Like the prodigal son, it took me reaching a place of total brokenness before I was able to come to myself and realize that I was living in a pigsty. Since then, God has turned my life around and blessed me with a beautiful, anointed wife who loves me beyond my brokenness. I can confidently say (beyond a shadow of a doubt) that she is the one that God kept for me. With that being said, I am clear that I could not even make such a bold proclamation without being able to assess where I have been and how those previous experiences have shaped me into the man, father, and husband I am today. I believe we should never be ashamed of our testimony or the mistakes that we have made in life. We are not immune to making mistakes, as it is a universal part of the human experience. Nevertheless, when you know better…you should do better. In other words, learn from your mistakes!
Christian wives desire godly leadership from their husbands, not dictatorship. Yet it is true that a man cannot lead others where he himself has not been. A leader goes first, forging the way, wrestling through spiritual issues and then presenting God’s instruction to his family. An ongoing personal relationship with God (through Jesus Christ) is crucial in order to lead a family spiritually. God holds men responsible for the spiritual and physical well-being of their families (1 Timothy 5:8). Even though the wife may be better at teaching and leading, this is still the husband’s responsibility. It is difficult for a Christian wife to respect her husband in other areas when he has not been consistent in leading her spiritually.
The purpose of this book is to help those husbands, and soon-to-be husbands, to develop the characteristics of a Godly husband. It is a journey of patience, humility, faithfulness and longsuffering. This journey requires that your main objective be to please God and love him unconditionally, knowing that He is the giver of every good and perfect gift. As husbands, we do not have to go out looking for love if we already love ourselves. Especially when God has already given us a wife who is the reflection of the love that He has placed within us.
If you believe in your heart that you can be the best husband that God has called you to be, then these words should resonate with you. If you are engaged to be married, prepare to abandon your secular theology on relationships and what it means to be happily married. This means voluntarily leaving your “bachelor card” at the altar. As you read this book, allow God through the Holy Spirit to transform you by the renewing of your mind, as you consider the possibilities of all that He has in store for you. Husbands, are you ready to fulfill God’s Promise in your life? Are you ready to walk into your Destiny? If your answer is yes, then let us prepare ourselves as we take this journey together!
