I have done some of the things in this book and succeeded. I found my passion, which is writing to entertain, inform and encourage everyone to discover their gifts and talents and take back their lives by using those gifts and talents to improve their lives and the lives of others.
Before I became a writer, I was a chef with a successful catering business. I now sell my gourmet breads, seasoning mixes and pastries at local farmers markets and festivals. When diagnosed with cancer, I borrowed a camera, took some photography courses, and made money taking family Christmas card pictures.
Thanks to my husband, I found a talent that helped me get through a serious automobile injury. In addition to selling my baked goods at markets and festivals, I also sell wood burned, hand colored and professionally finished lazy susans, cutting boards and other accessories at these same festivals and markets, and have won awards for them. This year I decided to look into adding hand painted nutcrackers. These did not work out the way I hoped they might, but I tried, learned and moved on. Does this make me rich? Hardly. However, the added income to our Social Security benefits helps us live a more peaceful, less stressful life.
My husband, a retired accountant who, like everyone else paid his dues, including taxes from which others benefit, collects Social Security and those in charge begrudged him his small monthly benefit that he paid for, by reducing it by $100 per month! He now owns a successful retirement sharpening business that he plans to teach others, and soon part of his Social Security check will be “extra money.”
We had precious little money to start our ventures, and if we can do this, so can you.
Will you get rich? The evidence suggests not, but you will be pleasantly surprised by how you can earn an income or several incomes on your terms and have fun doing it…and you just never know when what you offer will become wildly popular. But you must start!
The growth of successful home based entrepreneurs is proving the media naysayers wrong.
