A horror story is essentially about a character being confronted by some source of fear. The character is forced to deal with that fear and to face it. Eventually they must find a way to overcome it so that they may find peace in their life. But the character need not win in order to tell a good horror story. No, they can fail, the villain can win, but we must show and tell why the character failed so that we can understand why the villain won. The reader will need to understand by what flaw the character was held back by and why their refusal to change culminated in the victory for the villain. This leaves the reader with a cautionary tale and perhaps a little moral insight.
