Only a few people ever born can walk the shadow realm between parallel Earths. Those who have mastered shadow walking became gods, Odin, Zeus, Enlil, Brahma, and Kali were master shadow walkers. Rafe is a man who can walk between the worlds like a god.
What world would you create if you could?
Living in a world with infinite possibilities and parallel earths means you have the ability to create the exact circumstances you desire. Unfortunately, only a few can maneuver between the worlds without getting lost.
Those who have mastered shadow walking became gods, Odin, Zeus, Enlil, Brahma, and Kali were master shadow walkers. Rafe is a man who can walk between the worlds like a god.
In search of fame and fortune, Rafe encounters the darker side of the universe. Beyond the worlds where humans live, there are worlds where the rules are unexpected. Far beyond these worlds are places so incomprehensible they drive men mad. In this place which is neither dark nor light, where no rationality or order is possible, there are things that live beyond time and space, things that hunger for all things.
From the darkest place comes the Scourge, and it slowly intrudes into the shadows of order, bringing madness to both Man and world. It is up to Rafe and his army of Walkers to unite and to seal the way against the Scourge, before the stain of the Scourge's touch can twist all worlds everywhere into madness.
Excerpt
I dream, and in my dreaming, I remember another self, and another world. I am walking beside the river. The river is hidden by the reeds, with glimpses stolen through small gaps in the stand made by hungry grazers. The Tribe has herded sheep for millennia, and the sheep graze now on the grass that grows on the red clay hills. When first our fathers arrived in this valley of the rivers, the waters were higher, and our fathers built their houses upon mounds of dirt they built to stay above the water line. It is in this land of Ur that was, and Ur that will one day be, that I met my rare Ar-du, she of the dark hair and the flashing green eyes. In the place where the sheep forded the river, I met her by the waters. In the meeting, though we meet for the first time, I know her from years agone, and I remember the day of her death at the hands of my enemy long years hence. He paid the price of his life for his deed. In my agony did I unholster the bronze blade of Shuhadaku-Mashkimu and unleashed its rage upon my enemy, taking his head from his body as small payment for his evil.
I remember her, my Ar-du, and when the years at last have worn me down, and when the demons of the underworld have taken all things that I have, when I no longer remember me, I will remember her, my Ar-du.
I remember that, before the flooding of the lands, when the ancestors walked the lands, and flew the skies above this land, the Old People fell from the briefest touch of the hand of the Scourge. The voice of the Fathers was an Old Man when I was young, and he took great pride in knowing the complete words of the fall, as told by the Atlan that came to live with our Tribe after the Fall, and the Flood.
The Atlan said that the Hands of the demons reached down from the Gate of the Heavens, and unleashed upon the world of Man great storms, and great floods, and disease and death by vermin and by war. Most of Atlan died by fire and by water, or else by war did they perish. Most who survived these succumbed to the curse of the moon sickness, and perished as the mindless always die.
A very few of the great race did flee the sinking land, and were blessed to avoid the curse of the great dying or the Madness. These refugees scattered to the four corners of the world, and settled as they could with the peoples they found, and brought with them their secrets that held their magics. One of them came to us, and brought to us the news of things. This was 1223 winters ago as marked on the great reckoning.
No one knew why the Scourge came to unleash its evil upon our world, and none are there that knows why It stayed so briefly, and then was gone. The Scourge resembled She that is the Ummu-Hubur, Mother of all, who is also known by the wild tribes as Tiamat. Beside the Scourge, the Ummu-Hubur is the light of Heaven, the breath of Anu.
