Follow Franklin Cartwright as he moves to a small town to leave the big city behind. He finds a quirky little town and murder!
Having recently lost both parents to a brutal murder, Franklin Benjamin Cartwright has decided that it’s time to retire from life in the big city and try a quiet life in the country. While still young, he has inherited his family’s wealth and wants to leave the “rat race” behind. He decides to first try a small town called Witmore that claims to have a population under 1,000.
The place turns out to have some odd characters, but plenty of quiet charm that he is looking for. It also has a romantic interest in the form of local reporter Janice Fredricks. And most important, Franklin also comes across a wayward dog that has more to him than meets the eye initially.
What it also has is what Franklin wanted to avoid: murder! When the newly installed hotel manager turns up murdered, Franklin’s curious nature kicks in and he feels he can’t walk away without trying to solving it. What happens along the way surprises him and the whole town.
Excerpt
Janice Fredricks stood before him in red-flannel pajamas (tops and bottoms), with an expression of having just awoke. She had been coming down the stairs, still having one foot on the last stair. Before he could form a word besides “Uh”, she screamed, kicked him where a guy doesn't like to be kicked and ran outside in her pajamas yelling for help. Franklin immediately crumpled to the floor, holding what remained of his future for a family, gasping for air. He felt the slimy lick of a tongue on his face as he lay there. In the faint distance, as he seemed to lose consciences, he could hear faint screams of "help" and "someone broke in!", but there was little he could do so he drifted away into the dark.
The next voice he heard belonged to an elderly man, "Looks like he's coming 'round. I guess you didn't kill him after all." Franklin opened his eyes to slits, and then slowly widened them so as to see the man that belonged to this voice. He stared back at a white-haired that looked to be about 75 years old, but with a kindly face and a wide, toothy grin. "Hello there," he said to Franklin, "welcome back to the living."
As he looked around him, Franklin realized he was lying down on the couch in that cozy living room he had seen earlier. He tried to struggle up as he replied, "Good to be back." He gave a half grin as he still felt pains in his nether regions. He shook his head to try and bring full vision back to himself, and then it came back to him what had happened as he noticed a pair of watery green eyes peering at him over this gentleman's shoulder. In front of the man, there was a black and white dog trying to jump up on the couch with him. He was being held by a leash, the other end attached to Franklin's attacker.
