The Garnet Dagger is a great, fast paced read written in the first person. I really enjoyed this new author from Crimson Romance. The Garnet Dagger has an interesting premise and was drawn so clearly I could see everything as it happened. The Elvin hero Brock is cursed after being bitten by a Vampyre and is banished from his home. A prophecy states he must spill the blood of a witch and kill her in order to cure the dying world. But how cruel his fate when the witch, Celeste, turns out to be the one he has fallen in love with. This book had very vivid characters and I could see it all as if watching a movie. Looking forward to the next book by Andrea R Cooper!
Vivid Descriptions
The Garnet Dagger is filled with vivid descriptions that take you right through the barrier into into the author's world of danger and magic. I could feel the leaves crunching under my feet as Brock approaches the portal between his world and feel the vampire's rancid breath on my own neck. Andrea Cooper's beautiful use of poetic and emotional imagery unfold the elusive faces of prophecy showing a mirror image of history's misinterpretations in a fantasy world that are not far from ancient legends in our own. Celeste is misunderstood and condemned by those whose religion is everything but "pure and undefiled". The evil was real enough to give me nightmares yet Brock's struggle to triumph over it kept me reading to find out who and how the battles would be won. There is more to this story than fantasy. If you look through the symbolism and line it up with legend and real history it speaks volumes on the many faces of ancient evils and man's inability to "see through the glass" clearly.
A Fantasy excursion
THE GARNET DAGGER, the debut novel by Andrea R. Cooper, is a fantasy excursion into a world filled with Elves and Witches and Magic. Told in first person, through the eyes of her cursed hero, Cooper weaves together the story of an ancient curse and the witch who seems destined to fulfill the prophecies. The narrative is cast with a deft hand and beautiful descriptions, even if they do become a bit overwhelming and distracting at times. The world Cooper builds is impressive and her characters are memorable, reminiscent to me of those found in Tolkien or Martin. THE GARNET DAGGER is an enjoyable meld of fantasy and romance and a must-read for those who love their romance with a healthy side of otherworldly adventure.
