NEVER MIND THE MIND
Q. My mind is driving me crazy with its endless worrying about everything and nothing. It makes me ill and depressed, but I can’t seem to stop it. The trouble is, when I start going
into meditation I have the fear I’m losing my mind. What I read about samadhi states and loss of identity is a bit frightening.
You see? I even worry about not having a mind. I mean, how would I be able to function without it? Don’t we need the use of our minds in normal life?
A. As you do not appear to be functioning so well with ‘a mind’ perhaps it is worth investigating the alternative. If we observe closely what is going on, we might seriously question as to whether there is a mind at all. Granted, there is a garrulous
thought-flow always going on like a babbling brook, but is this ‘thoughtless’ chatter really the mind? The reality of this activity seems something more in the nature of ‘mental interference’ inwhat would otherwise be the smooth functioning of the body.
What we take to be mind appears rather like the erratic static we get on a radio set when we are trying to tune in to the correct station. Is it static we are after, or a clear programme? We might consider that maybe in our ‘normal’ functioning we are somewhere ‘between stations’ and are just not operating on the right frequency. And most of us do not appear to be searching — or not searching seriously—for the right programme: let alone considering switching ‘mind’ off altogether!
Mentation—the thinking capacity—covers all thinking processes, including perceiving, imagining, daydreaming, nightdreaming, fantasising, calculating, analysing, scheming, recalling, memorising, etc.
All these faculties come under the useful blanket term ‘mind.’
But that does not mean there is one.
(This should be remembered whenever I speak of ‘the mind’elsewhere for the sake of convenience).
It should not therefore be taken to exist as a thing-in-itself.
This seemingly endless ‘stream of thoughts’ we fondly like to call our ‘mind’ is a form of mental dis-ease which, when left to its own devices, generally tends to run amok, resulting in the enervation and degeneration of the body. If we are really convinced of the need for this tedious mind-flow, then we are free to accept its destructive mental processes and carry on suffering.
If we take ‘mind’ to be a personal ‘possession’ it places us in bondage to its machinations. Our very idea of having ‘a mind’ possesses us, and we feel obliged to go along with it. If,
however, we decide we have had enough of it, we must first see what is really going on, if we are to be convinced we no longer require it. Otherwise we are habitually caught up in its ramblings, often spending most of our lives prematurely worrying over problems which never actually occur in reality.
Such negative, worrisome or fearful attitudes of ‘mind’prepare the way for the development of bodily malfunction.
Thus most, if not all, illnesses of the body occur as a result of our mental condition. For example: the relationship between mental stress and cancer is now well documented and firmly established. So worriers can create a thought-induced vicious
circle, by making themselves prone to internal diseases purely from the fact of worrying that they might be prone to them.
Also many people are afraid of ‘catching’ some germ or other,
whereas the reality—as shown by the miracle of electron-microscopy—
is that our bodies are filled with uncountable bugs and microbes (a whole universe of living beings within
ourselves) from birth to death. Apparently there are always
three or four pounds of micro-organisms in the average healthy
human being!
Any new ‘bugs’ we may ingest are absorbed by our interior
‘eco-system’ or flushed right through. Rarely do they manifest
as ailments unless we have created a suitable breeding ground
by both our physical and mental ‘diets’. It is the basic ‘climate’
of our thoughts which determines whether we shall be ill—or remain ill—no matter what our healer or doctor tries to do.
Every illness may be seen as a form of subtle wish fulfilment, or poetic justice, according to the cosmic law of: ‘As we sow in the soul—so shall we reap in the body’.
