Involving your child in good deeds is a terrific way to boost her self confidence. Everyone likes doing nice things for others. It simply feels good. There are several ways you can do this. When I was a kid, my mom would keep change in her purse at all times. When we would go to the grocery store, she would give me some of her change to drop into the charity box by the store’s entrance. I do this with my kids now. You can have your child pick out what meal to buy or make for the homeless man on the corner. Allow your child to hand him the meal and say something nice, like, “Have a great day.” You can have your child make a thank you card for her teacher. Teach your child to ask people if she can be of assistance to them. Most of the time the answer will be no, but your child will feel good about herself just for asking. Not to mention, a lot of adults will go out of their way to let her know how nice it was. One day I was at a restaurant with my daughter Skye, who was 8 at the time. While we were there she used the rest room. I didn’t go with her, but I could see the bathroom from where we were sitting. While Skye was leaving the restroom, she held the door open for a woman who was walking out at the same time. This woman went out of her way to come to our table and tell us how nice my daughter was for holding the door open for her. Skye was so proud, that even today at 13, she still mentions this in conversation from time to time.
