The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith was founded by Bishop Sherrod C. Johnson who was born November 24, 1898 in Pinetree Quarter, Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
He came to Philadelphia and became pastor of the first Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith located at 1254 South 17th Street in the year of 1919. . . . Though the Church was not recognized, nor chartered as the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith in the year 1919, the doctrine and the beginning of the Church started on the sidewalk, in the streets, and in the highways of the city of Philadelphia. . . . These were days of small things, days of the beginning. These were days of tent meetings, ragged clothing, and hungry stomachs. . . . Through much destitution, much labor, he held on to God’s word. Many souls were brought into The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ through many tent meetings and evangelistic tours. As time went on, God showed him the weakness of the so-called Apostolic brethren and showed him what he must do in order to establish the Church. Then God gave him the name of His only Church, The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. Bishop Johnson told them, “If God does not bless my ministry, say that I am not of God (7-8).
“Later the Lord called him to the Apostle-ship speaking to him with a man’s voice telling him John 20:21. ‘. . . As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.’ Then his ministry began to grow throughout the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world” (8).
“But it was on an island washed by the green-blue waters of the Caribbean; being full of the Holy Ghost, he rested from his labor and slept in the Lord. . . . Though he lay a dying, he did not receive any aid or comfort from natural man. He did this because he wanted a better resurrection. When he saw the grief, the despair, the loneliness, the tears and anxiety in those whom he brought forth by the Word, he told them: ‘Victory is Ours, Give God the glory, It’s All Right.’
“So it was on an island washed by the green-blue waters of the Caribbean where he rested from his labor. On February 22, 1961 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, this beloved Apostle and Founder and Father of many nations at the age of [62] being full of the Holy Ghost, rested from his labor and slept in the Lord” (8).
Commentary: The old Headquarters Church was destroyed by fire one Sunday during church service. Everyone was talking about it—they were amazed at how Bishop Johnson remained calm and ordered the people out of the building in an orderly manner. It was in the newspaper and Bishop was a testimony to the city of Philadelphia because he showed how God took away the old church, but He blessed him with a much bigger and better one even when many saints were unemployed. It was built by faith; it is just as Blessedness said—that this large, historic building was built by faith, sacrifice, a vision, and determination.
Many people heard Bishop Johnson (a Hamite) on his large Apostolic Faith Radio network. That is how my mother and thousands of others heard the Whole Truth. The network began in Philadelphia in 1937 and then spread around much of the world. Bishop Johnson was known for his unique voice. Our neighbors used to tell us that there was something in the voice Bishop Johnson. He drew large crowds through his debates. He had many Caucasians coming out to see him even in the 1950s when discrimination was rampant, and many became members of the Church though they suffered criticism and injustices and were ostracized by their family and peers. Bishop Johnson was known for his famous song which God gave to Him: “One Way to God.” He condemned the religious world, letting them know that according to the Bible, God had only one Church—The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. He taught that Jesus is the name of God. When my mother heard him over the radio, she said that she said to herself—“why doesn’t he get off the radio arguing,” but she found out that he was preaching the truth. When Blessedness speaks of how Bishop comforted them at the end of his life, telling them that “Victory is Ours, Give God the glory, It’s All Right,” I am reminded of how Blessedness comforted me in much the same way—telling me not to worry because in the end all will be well.
Sick and in need of rest, Bishop Johnson went to Jamaica. But before he left for Kingston, Jamaica to rest, he told Brother S. McDowell Shelton: “I want you to take care of everything; it’s getting too heavy for me.” And after the passing of Bishop S. C. Johnson, Brother Shelton became the next Bishop, pastor and general overseer amidst much turmoil, strife, hostility, and infighting—he was “taking care of everything.”
A short history of the early years of His Holy Apostolic Blessedness, Bishop S. M. Shelton
Blessedness, like Jesus Christ, was often envied and sometimes despised; nevertheless, he was a good man, and a man of good works. He was a prophet from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and born into this world to be the leader of God’s people and to do God’s work. He had never belonged to any other church. He said that he never believed in a trinity; he believed in only one God whose name is Jesus. This is explained in further detail in his messages as he is the chief prophet and apostle of God Almighty. He was born and raised here in this Church and was named after church service, after Bishop Johnson had preached about the prophet Samuel. Therefore, he was named Samuel which means: “he whom God hears.” They say that when they brought him into the temple as a baby that he spoke in other tongues. They put him up in a chair at the age of two to sing for church services. His grandparents were key witnesses of Bishop Johnson. His grandmother was the national mother and the president of the Apostle’s Aide, and she traveled with Bishop Johnson doing missionary work. His uncle was Bishop Johnson’s chauffeur, and his Aunt Anna Mae was the directress of the choir and played the piano. Blessedness’ Aunt Anna Mae also prophesied about him often until prophecies were fulfilled and he became bishop.
He said that Bishop S. C. Johnson claimed him as his son and also paid for his education. I understand that he earned a PhD in psychology. He studied many languages and made broadcasts in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German. It was reported that he was fluent in French. He also was learned in ancient tongues. I read that he attended Rutgers and Lincoln Universities. He also studied finance in school. He said that he got the degrees for our sake, and to assist with the administration of the church.
Blessedness said that from a child he had always known that he would be the leader of God’s people. He said that Bishop Johnson always told him to separate himself from the others; which is to say—not to get common with the people. Blessedness was the type of man who refused to serve in the Korean War because he did not believe in killing. He even refused to serve in non-combative services, because he did not want to aid in any way those who supported that cause. Consequently, he went to prison for about two to three years. At church, he served in the capacities of National Young People’s President, National Men’s Supervisor, and the Secretary General. After Bishop Johnson passed in 1961, he became our next Bishop, Apostle, Pastor and General Overseer. He was ordained, even though he said that it was not necessary. He said, “When was Peter ordained?” He was already a prophet, for those who knew him also knew that he was endowed with that gift.
I remember him saying that when he was tarrying (seeking the Lord) for the Holy Ghost that he saw the face of Jesus, and he saw Him there on Calvary; he saw blood coming down. He saw the light from God’s face, and just as he was about to look into His eyes he received the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking in other tongues. He said that he was not perplexed as to why he saw all of this, for to just speak in other tongues was not enough for him, because he was born into this world to lead God’s people.
Blessedness was a great pastor and shepherd who lovingly cared for his flock. We, the saints, always called on him for prayer when we were sick, in trouble—whatever the need. Blessedness even raised the dead. And he gave his life in caring for God’s people and in the service of the Lord.
Blessedness said that he was the last one to see Jesus. He said that Bishop Johnson testified more than once that he knew when he got the Holy Ghost, because he could feel the Holy Ghost leaping in his belly, and he had to remove his hat as he was walking through downtown in Stamford, CT.
Indeed, Blessedness was a dynamic, altruistic Man of God. The Church benefited immensely from his generosity—he liberally gave his finance for the work of the Lord. Under his leadership, many thousands came into the Church, and churches were built in: Ironsides, MD; Ellendale, DE; Newark, New Jersey; and Cape Charles, VA. He purchased many properties and churches including the edifice in Lynwood, CA which is worth over a million dollars and the church in Atlanta, GA. He also built the Apostolic Village on Apostolic Square, a 32 unit independent living apartment complex; He built a school in Hyderabad, India, and started an Apostolic Institute in Philadelphia.
Bishop S. M. Shelton traveled worldwide, taking the Word of God and promoting the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith to world leaders; he met with many prime ministers, and heads of state, including His Majesty, King Hussein of Jordan, the Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and many others. He was invited to participate in Paris Peace Talks to present his plan on how the war in Vietnam should be ended. He made a live broadcast from Mars Hill in Athens, Greece in 1973. I’ve named only a few of his accomplishments.
Background of the author
I am the seventh of twelve children. I was born to Furlow and Lucile Williams in Atlanta, Georgia where I have lived my entire life. My parents came into the Church, The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith—an international Church—whose headquarters is in Philadelphia, PA, before I was born. My mother heard Bishop S. C. Johnson preaching on the radio when she was seeking the Lord, and feeling doubtful about the churches she had attended so far. And after hearing him and being convinced that what he was preaching was right, she got baptized when he came to Atlanta in 1954 and opened up a church here. My mother, a very God fearing woman, raised me in the Church. I grew up loving the Lord, and loving His Blessedness, Bishop S. M. Shelton. I always looked forward to December every year, because I was excited about seeing Bishop at the Georgia State Convention; it was the highlight of our year. I loved going to church in general. We did not believe in Christmas and did not receive toys for that holiday; neither did we believe in Easter. We believed that they were pagan festivals. These subjects are covered later on in the messages of His Blessedness.
As a young girl, I used to dream often about Bishop, especially before our Georgia State Convention. I believe I was around thirteen (in my early teens) when I dreamed that Bishop came to our house in his limousine; I don’t remember my exact age. I dreamed another dream similar to the first one shortly afterward, and I told them to my family. These dreams portend of the prominence that Blessedness would play in my life. I remember one of my brothers saying to me that I was going to be somebody one day. However, I did not know what the dreams meant.
Bishop would direct us from the pulpit; he would give instruction to others to tell us thus and so. I remember Bishop at our Convention in South Carolina in 1973. Blessedness asked Brother T. Hendrix (later on a deacon) from Atlanta, GA to communicate to one of the officials that he wanted us to start a Young Adult choir. I sang with this new Young Adult Choir. Apparently, Blessedness wanted me to have some activity in church.
I received my apostolic training at Church from my father and Blessedness; I received my natural education at the University, and obtained a bachelor’s degree (BBA) with a major in accounting. I also studied languages: Spanish, French, and a little Portuguese, Italian and German. I often refer to Blessedness as my father, and you will see how I received instruction from him even as a teenager. It was he who encouraged me to join the choir and to attend my first Youth Conference. He generally instructed me from the pulpit and in his messages for I was one who wanted to be obedient to God and my Blessedness. After I graduated from high school, I went to my first Youth Conference in 1974. An account of that appears below.
Chicago in 1974: National Youth Conference
When I was in my last year of high school, Blessedness sent Brother Alvin Williams, a National official (1st National Assistant President) of the Young People’s Department, to Atlanta a few months before the Youth Conference to encourage the young people in Atlanta to attend the National Youth conference in Chicago in 1974. I remember Brother A. Williams, now called Lord Alvin Williams, telling us that he met his wife at the Youth Conference. Thus, the young people got excited about going to the Youth Conference. We were instructed to bring clothes appropriate for exercising. I made some clothes and my sister and I went up on the church bus. This would be my first time going to a national conference, and my first time going away from home for a week.
We arrived in Chicago on Saturday before the Conference started. It lasted from the 2nd First Day (Sunday) to the 3rd First Day in the 7th Month (July). And because Blessedness was so dedicated, we saw him every day and sometimes twice a day. We had services at 8:00 AM and at 12:00 noon on First Days, and also every evening during the week. The auditorium was especially packed on the 2nd weekend. I loved the choir. The services were charged and the spirit was high—and the saints were dancing in the Lord. I seem to remember Blessedness saying, “Come on and die now and you won’t have to die any more” after the choir sang the song: “If I die now, I won’t have to die any more.” I can’t say for certain whether this was in 1974, because I attended several Youth Conferences in Chicago. I remember that Blessedness had a debate with a preacher from some other organization in 1974 (my first Youth Conference). Of course, Blessedness won. I remember when he (the other preacher) left, that some of his own members did not leave with him.
One of the highlights of the Conference was the meditation services. The sisters had a day, and then the brothers had a day. And Blessedness had a brother to come and teach us some exercises that we could do daily to keep us in shape. Afterward, we patiently waited on Blessedness who had us to do more exercises—perhaps to wake us up. I remember him asking us if anyone had any questions. He gave us some information and advice that we could use to improve our natural lives. During the meditation services, we called on the name of Jesus after doing the exercises. And many of the young people and some of the older saints received the gift of the Holy Ghost and answers to their prayers. This took place in the afternoon, and afterward we ate dinner and then prepared for the evening services. There was great joy after the meditation services; parents and siblings would be waiting outside to see if their loved ones received the gift of the Holy Ghost. There was much rejoicing and blessing of the Lord. The testimonies and rejoicing continued throughout the evening services. Of course, when Bishop came out there was more rejoicing and healing. One night, I went to an all-night tarrying service because Bishop asked everyone who did not have the Holy Ghost to come to that all night tarrying service. After tarrying awhile and getting tired, I remember that things perked up; I sensed that Bishop must have come into the tarrying room (the room for seekers). The highlight was that a deaf and dumb brother, Brother Cole, received the gift of the Holy Ghost. He spoke in other tongues and then said, “I got the Holy Ghost.” Afterward, he didn’t speak any more.
On the 6th day (Friday), Bishop had Divine Healing Services. I remember Bishop leaving the service, and then returning. When he returned, he came down the aisle and asked if anyone wanted prayer. Then, a sister got up for healing; she was deaf. Bishop put his fingers on or in her ears, and then began talking to her. Then he said, “Do you realize that you are hearing everything that I am saying right now?” Immediately, she and the congregation as a whole started to rejoicing—a miracle right from the start!
We had time for relaxing also. One day we went on a boat ride. Also, on the Fifth day called Thursday, we went to a park and had a picnic and walks. But the greatest delight of all was seeing Bishop out in the park. He was walking holding the hand of Sister K. Williams, the wife of Brother A. Williams, the one who came to encourage us to attend the Youth Conference. One of the sisters from Atlanta had a camera and she wanted to take Bishop’s picture. So, he told her that he would do something that he usually doesn’t do—he would pose for her to take his picture.
I seem to remember Bishop telling us to pack our bags on Saturday night and to be ready to leave—just like a parent talking to his children. He admonished us to hold on and to be faithful, because at home the services won’t be like the services that we’d had in Chicago. One thing I knew for sure after going to Chicago and having seen many infallible proofs is that God was indeed with my father and Blessedness.
You can see from my synopsis of the conference that Blessedness was a man of God who truly had the welfare of the young people and the saints of God as a whole on his mind and in his heart. Before the conference started, he sent someone to encourage us to come, and then he saw to it that our days were filled up with good activities, mostly at church. One could see that he thought about it in advance and made plans. He didn’t take it lightly. Once Blessedness said that he was so interested in the Church that if you picked up a pin from the floor, he would like to know about it. I remember hearing the National Women’s Supervisor talk about how she did her exercises daily—the same exercises which were taught to us at the Youth Conference. I believe that she was older than my mother. Thank God, I had a beautiful experience at my first Youth Conference. I was with the saints of God for about nine days almost exclusively, and it was wonderful. It was good to be with like-minded people: people who believed in the same thing. Above all, I enjoyed seeing, hearing, and being with my Bishop and father in Christ; it was a stimulating experience.
This Youth Conference was a great introduction to what would be the highlight of my life for the next 17 years: attending conferences and conventions, and usually Blessedness was in attendance. Blessedness was teaching me, refining me and putting the Word in me over the next 17 years after I graduated. I learned through time more about Blessedness ways. Specifically, I learned what was required of me. During this time we grew closer, learning each other likes and dislikes. Our love grew until he passed on the 13th day of the Tenth Month (October) 1991. Thus, I sat at the feet of Blessedness (my Gamaliel) for about 17 years: from July 1974 until he passed on 13 October 1991.
Chicago in 1975: National Youth Conference
In 1975, I went to a portion of the Youth Conference in Chicago for a few days. On that 6th day (Friday), Blessedness asked all the young people to fast, because it was a regular fast day. Many young people did not fast on fast days; therefore, Blessedness made sure that we knew he wanted us to fast. Afterward, Blessedness told us that he wanted us to fast because he was going to fast for forty days and that we, the saints, were going to fast with him. Thus by fasting on that Friday, he was preparing us for this special fast. We were told about the forty-day fast which would start the last day of the Youth Conference and would last until the first day of our annual International Conference in Philadelphia. After the forty-day fast, Blessedness would have someone blow the rams horn—I believe it was at the beginning and the end of the fast. Then we had a feast at the end of the forty day fast. The introduction of the forty-day fast into our Apostolic Calendar was something that we did annually starting in 1975. The year 1975 seems to have been a pivotal year for the Church. I remember that Blessedness planted a tree at our church in Wilson, North Carolina. Here, we generally had some very good services, and the communication was great between us (Blessedness and me). I remember Blessedness said that in the Bible after Moses, Elijah, and Jesus Christ had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, that there was a major change in the order of things.
This forty-day fast represents to me something that would discipline and keep me, and take me from my youth to a time when I would be mature in my walk with Christ Jesus: It started at the Youth Conference and ended at our main International Convention of the Church in Philadelphia where the emphasis was on the activities of those mature saints of the Church.
It was during this period of the forty-day fast that His Eminence, Bishop S. M. Shelton received the title of Blessedness. It was given to him by the Lord. I don’t know when he began using the title of Father Abraham Samuel Judah, but I am sure that it was sometime after the beginning of the first-forty day fast. You may notice throughout this book the use of several titles which all refer to God’s chief prophet in this evening-time which are: Apostle S. McDowell Shelton, Bishop S. M. Shelton (BSMS), Father Abraham Samuel Judah, His Holy Apostolic Blessedness (HHAB), pastor and General Overseer. I often refer to him as my father and/ or my Blessedness.
The saints in general called him “Blessedness” for we saw him as most blessed. Of course, I knew that my blessings came through him. He was God’s ambassador, and a very devout man of God. If this appellation of “His Blessedness” is foreign to you, then you may think of it as “His Holiness.” At times, I use the title of Bishop when I am referring to times earlier than July 1975. I will occasionally use the title of Blessedness for he was indeed my Blessedness, even though we didn’t call him that before July 1975. During the early part of his ministry, he was often referred to as His Eminence, or as His Holiness.
Blessedness makes a change
After the fast in 1975, Blessedness seemed to be most diligent in preparing those around him and the Church at large for a change to take place. It seemed that it was around this time when he started holding service all night long. It was also in this year that he married his daughter off to a brother in the Church; this is what I call an apostolic marriage, because there was no courting between them. He selected him or the Lord moved on him to select this brother; they (his daughter and her husband to be) did not know each other personally. Blessedness said that he told his daughter that he was going to send her someplace where she would not be lonely any more. She thought that he was going to send her to a foreign country. I remember saying afterward that I wanted Blessedness to select my husband.
After Blessedness’ daughter got married, he began adopting more sons and grandsons, and elevating some with titles of duke, lord, sir, lady and dame, etc. Of course, his sons were princes. He was setting up a dynasty which he said was recognized in most countries in the world other than the United States.
Once Blessedness said that he was capable of having children just like any other man; however, he was preparing for the continuance of the Church. He was setting up an order for the future—a royal priesthood as it is mentioned in the Bible. He said that he was more concerned about them (his sons, daughter and grandsons) than many natural parents, since he got them for a purpose and because he wanted them. But many parents had their children because they were mistakes. In my conclusion, I thank God for sending me the Blessedness, and I thank Blessedness for including me in his evening-time message of prophecy.
In this book, I shall present the messages of His Holy Apostolic Blessedness, then I will comment on them so that you can see the movement of God’s Spirit in my life through the messages of my father and Blessedness. I also will make commentaries on sermons from the “Whole Truth” magazines. Through these messages, you will see how I have grown under the tutelage of my Blessedness. Whenever you see a question mark behind a word or phrase, this means that I wrote what the tape sounded like; however, I was not 100 percent sure. Some services were 12 to 13 hours long, so they will not be like sermons many people are accustomed to, but for me, they were like being at home with my father and Blessedness. A large portion of the live messages were sung; this gives us the repetition of lines. Generally the entire message from the service is not available.

Commentary on “THE WILL AND THE DO” By Bishop S. McDowell Shelton
Text: Phil. 2:13; John 14:6; Malachi 3:17; John 20:22; I Cor. 15:51; Acts 1:8; John 12:28
In this message, Blessedness taught us about working “the will and the do” in our lives. If we will to do something in the name of Jesus Christ, then we will be able to do it. He said that this “will” must be developed. We must learn, as Blessedness says, “to exercise and mature our will. It is your will that helps you to overcome pain and not succumb to it. . . . Your will will make you go through (with the help of God) and achieve, when you felt you did not have the strength. ‘Spirit strength’ takes over and you do those things which you thought was beyond your chronological age, beyond your physical capacity” (8).
Right now, I have the will to do the Lord’s will and to continue fighting the good fight of faith. I am willing myself to put into practice those things that Blessedness has taught me and to continue to press on—over all obstacles until victory is won. Blessedness said that when you will yourself, you are able to work and accomplish that which you thought was beyond your ability. He said “Will yourself to do it through the name of Jesus Christ, and do it! You can do it!” (8). And I shall do it with God’s help.
Blsd said “When we could not move or could not walk—that was only for that time! It was for a purpose, as we told you . . . this was to strengthen us. We never stopped…never complained! …We never stopped our work one day! We never missed a service! We never missed an appointment, and traveled for miles and miles. They had to carry us sometimes out of airplanes, or out of the automobile, but once we got on the pulpit, we had new life! We did not need help once we got up there!” (10-11). What an extraordinary example I have!
Blsd said, “You have the will! Keep the will and you will get ‘the do.’ Do not even worry about it” (8). When I think back, I can apply the will and the do to this book. It was my will to write a book about Blessedness, but I did not know how I would write it. I had started some years ago, but it was not much and I did not know how it would become a book because I just said a little about myself and Blessedness. Since Blessedness and I did not communicate through face to face conversations, I did not know how to order the book. But somehow with the help of God, it came to me— here a little and there a little.
Blessedness instructed me years ago on how to order my book by speaking to one of his grandsons, called “The Little Giant.” Blessedness seldom spoke directly to me; he spoke to me in parables and by speaking to others. Speaking to Elder Onesimus, called the Little Giant, on a pre-recorded message at church, Blsd said, “Write everything I said in a book.” In another message, Blessedness asked some lords of the church if they thought they could make commentary on the message. Then speaking about it in another message, paraphrasing he said: “first tell the message like it is, before you start commenting on it saying it means this.” I was just listening to a tape from a Bringing-Forth Day Service (Blessedness’ Birthday celebration) where Blessedness was singing “I will testify among men,” which I am sure is related to my testimony here. I am certain that I will testify before many people, for God is doing a great work in my life. There were other messages in which he alluded to this book, instructing me on how to do this work. Once, he was speaking about the message, and then he said that we may have it typed and published.
God worked it out as I listened to and read Blessedness’ messages: and remembering that message which I heard many years ago, where he told Elder Onesimus, “The Little Giant,” to write everything he said in a book, I received my basic instructions. I received my answer as to how to order the book—the do.
Elder Onesimus passed away before His grandfather and Blessedness. Blsd often spoke to his family members while giving me instructions. And speaking of “The Little Giant,” who looked like “The Little Giant” more than I, for I was quite tall and slim (especially in the 1970s) and I suppose people thought that I looked like a little giant. Elder Onesimus was short. As I went about writing and working the do, it all came together. Here again, Blessedness did his work so well. Here a little and there a little, in the various messages he spoke and gave me instructions, so that I might know how to do this great work given to me by God through His Blessedness.
Once Blessedness spoke about the Apostles and how they wrote the book of Acts—The Acts of the Apostles—establishing their credibility. He said that knowing his personality, he wouldn’t have done that—written a book about his accomplishments. At that point, I knew that I would be the one to write about my Blessedness—it was my will. I thank God for Blessedness who instructed me on how to do it, and had faith that I could do this great work. When I was young, I did not see myself writing a book. But as I was taught in Church by my father and Blessedness: “I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.”
