Chapter 1: Depend on God, Not on Man
God wants all His children to depend on Him in every area of their lives. Although this may seem hard to do, it can be done by praying and asking the Holy Spirit to help you. Remember, the Biblical Scripture says:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding
Proverbs 3:5
Let me give you a scenario that will give you more understanding. Suppose you have a child, and you are worth several billions of dollars. Your kid needs a new pair of shoes, and instead of asking you for money, he or she asks one of your friends, who is worth less than a hundred thousand dollars. When you hear about this, will you not be upset and disappointed? Yes, I am sure you will! This scenario is the same as we Christians depending on man, instead of depending on God. Man has limited amount of money and other resources while God has unlimited resources. This only shows you that you can receive way more from God than from man. We can see in the scripture that God is the owner of all the wealth in our world; he only entrusts man to manage it. Our God is very generous. One great reason I say this is, He gives man the opportunity to manage His financial resources, and yet asks for only ten percent back in return (tithes). Have you ever seen any business man or woman who owns a company, gives ninety percent of the revenues to his or her manager, and keeps only ten percent? I do not think so! Not in this present world! The biblical scripture that supports the unlimited financial resources of God can be seen in Psalm 50 verse 10.
For every beast of the forest is mine,
And the cattle on a thousand hills.
Psalm 50:10
People find it easier to depend on man than on God, because they can physically see and interact with man. Let me stress that depending on God is not as easy as it sounds; it takes faith and patience. However, most Christians lack either faith, patience, or both.
Just the mere fact that God says in His Word:
God is not man that He should lie
Numbers 23:19
This should motivate us to be in total dependence on God. When God says He will give you your desires, He surely will; however, it will be in His time and not your own. One great factor that drives people to deviate from depending on God is impatience. For example, this can be seen in the case of Abraham and Sarah, when God promised them their first child at an old age. Although Abraham was full of hope and faith, Sarah, his wife, could not wait for God’s appointed time, and therefore, lured her husband to sleep with his house maid who bore a son for him (Ishmael). Sarah’s lack of dependence on God is what brought about the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist attacks in our current world; the son of Abraham and Abraham’s house maid is the ancestor of the Islamic world.
When you shift your focus off God, it is very easy for the enemy to deviate you from trusting in God. It is this that makes people cut corners so their desires are met quickly, instead of waiting patiently on God’s time. Why do you think people engage in selling drugs, stealing cars, stealing money, and embezzling money at work? This is caused by lack of patience for God’s time, which shows lack of dependence on God.
It is written:
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11
This scripture is enough to make me totally dependent on God.
