A moose poacher is convicted because of an unusual print left in the snow. A man is poisoned and his hair provides a timeline that helps to convict his murderer. And a killer who tried to muffle his gunshot is caught because of a feather.
All these stories involve crime, which is any act that breaks the law. Crimes can be dangerous, messy, and confusing. Many different people are involved with solving a crime and bringing the perpetrator, the person who committed the crime, to justice.
Police officers are usually the first people at a crime scene. They are sometimes referred to as “first responders.” A phone call comes into the police station, and the dispatcher sends officers to the site. If there is a death at the scene, a coroner or the medical examiner will go to examine the body. Criminalists, or crime scene investigators, collect and preserve the evidence. In small towns, the police may be the ones who collect evidence and send it to the crime lab for study by forensic scientists or crime laboratory technicians. Detectives are police officers who specialize in interviewing both witnesses and victims, their job includes checking the neighborhood for clues and making lots of telephone calls for background information. Sometimes, if a crime scene is indoors, forensic scientists will come to view the scene in situ—that’s Latin for “in its original setting”—and examine the grounds and the body the way they were found.
