Some family arguments heat up. The Gardeners' family feud has cooled down. Way down.
Unusual ingredients found in their products are threatening the good reputation of Gardener's Spice & Herb Company, so R&P Labs agree to investigate. But what seems like a simple job takes a deadly twist when one member of the Gardener family has a fatal accident on an icy road and another is freeze-dried along with the herbs. Before long, the scientists turned sleuths are separating a pair of battling brothers, babysitting a lively septuagenarian and finding themselves on very thin ice as they race against time to discover who is killing off their clients one by one.

The ice under Mitch’s legs had cracked and his feet were now hanging down into the icy water. “This would probably be a good time to get me out of here.”
“OK. Here we go. Don’t rush it and don’t try to crawl or you’ll crack it some more. Just kind of slither on your stomach.”
“Yeah, I’m good at that. Just ask Catherine.”
Ellis lay down at the water’s edge and extended the sapling out as far as he could reach, holding the thickest end in both hands. Mitch stretched his arms out in front of him.
“I can’t quite reach it. I’ll try to move a little.”
He inched forward and managed to catch hold of the topmost branches. The ice cracked again.
“Good. Hold on. I’ll try to pull you in and if you can help at all, do it.”
“Yeah, I will. Good thing you do all that golf and sailing and skiing stuff, isn’t it? Builds the biceps up, I reckon.”
“Shut up and hang on.”

Review of 'Icefox'
I found # 8 in the R and P Labs Mysteries series to be both gripping and touching. While I knew what was happening ~ I was reading rapidly to find out if our intrepid labbies would be in time. And the epilogue when Mitch meets his son was well done; I was a bit teary.
As I've said in earlier reviews - I like the characters and would love to hang in the lab and have a cookie and some coffee.
A friend asked me why I give 5 stars to books. It is simple. If I like the characters, enjoy the story line AND the writing or formatting does not get in the way of my enjoyment then I give 5. I am looking for an enjoyable read~ not the great American novel. Hurst writes well and has created a series that I enjoy.
