Dixon removed his coat and hung it carefully over the back of the chair. Zach and Del exchanged glances. After the “whiz kid” description, Zach had pictured him as a pedantic, slightly vague academic in his twenties, but the picture obviously needed alteration. He suspected Del had been similarly misled.
Dixon might be a whiz, but he was no kid. He was in his forties, thin, with neatly combed dark hair and sharp features. He had a scar on his forehead, just above his nose, which was the only indication life had ever done anything to him he hadn’t been expecting.
Del raised his eyebrows and Zach shrugged slightly. Dixon turned back from adjusting his coat and said in his calm, precise voice, “Shall we get started, gentlemen?”
“Sure,” Zach said. He pulled his chair around to face Dixon and sat down. It crossed his mind this must have been how Dr. Faustus felt at the moment he first met the Devil.
