Zukie put the carton on the microwave tray and closed the door, setting the timer as the instructions directed. She pushed the button to start it and went across the kitchen to get some salad items from the fridge, since the size of the carton made her think something else would be needed to complete the meal. It was meant to serve two people, but not if one of them was Lou.
She was halfway through slicing the tomatoes and cucumber when an ominous noise came from the microwave, a sort of thumping and hissing combination. Lou looked up from his model.
“What the heck’s that?”
“I don’t know. I’m just heating it up, like it said.”
“Doesn’t sound right to me. Did you …”
A loud bang cut off his words. The microwave fell silent and Zukie winced.
“I think you killed it,” Lou said.
